View Full Version : Clutch Operation
memcgraw Oct 19th, 00, 04:18 AM I'm using a McLoed clutch, new throwout bearing, GM fork, Lakewood bellhousing and a Lakewood adjustable ball stud. Last weekend I just installed the adjustable ball stud last weekend as the stock length wasn't enough. I now have the engine back in the car less the tranny so I can make sure the stud is set up right. Looking for a sanity check on a few things before I re-install the tranny as the Tremec covers the ball stud, precluding adjustment with the tranny in the car.
When the pedal is fully released, how far should the bearing be away from the clutch fingers? And how much deflection of the fingers should there be when the pedal is fully depressed? I watched mine while #1 son depressed the pedal, and I would say the fingers were depressed about 1/2". Note that is was hard to keep everything straight while doing this as I didn't have the input shaft to the transmission there.
I didn't try this, but should I be able to spin the clutch disk with the pedal depressed?

davidpozzi Oct 19th, 00, 11:35 AM There is a hole in the bottom of the bellhousing where you put a feeler guage between the disc and pressure plate.
At full depression you should have around .030"
Trouble is the some new discs have enough fuzz on them it's hard to measure a new one. Also I have seen problems with new discs releasing fully until broken in a fiew hundred miles.
It would be good to measure off the old bellhousing to the stud and allow for the block plate if you are using one. I think the block plate throws things off.

McLoed told me that the fork should be perpendicular to the input shaft went the all the clearance is taken out of the system.

pdq67 Oct 19th, 00, 07:12 PM Ditto on both points.
Mark, can you remove the rubber boot on the throwout bearing lever and get a look at its position??? pdq67

Thanks for all the inputs. Going to take a fresh look at it today. Boy I love being off on Fridays!! Going to try the feeler gauge test but I don't believe there is a hole in the bottom of the bellhousing but I may be wrong. I'll just try to go in where the clutch fork is if there isn't one.

CarlC Oct 20th, 00, 06:18 AM My McLoed scattershield does not have an inspection hole. The only access is through the fork hole.

pdq67 Oct 20th, 00, 08:25 AM David,
Will the bellhousing to be able to pass an "NHRA" type inspection if Mark would drill an inspection hole in his new Lakewood bellhousing so he can insert a feeler gage???
Just a small 5/8" or 3/4" hole at the very bottom of the bellhousing???
I don't know what the safety rules are with respect to "modifications" to bellhousings. Or do they have to be used as manufactured ONLY??? pdq67
davidpozzi Oct 27th, 00, 09:15 PM pdq67,
I don't know. I'd ask first. The bellhousing I have is an old Lakewood. I haven't seen the newer ones and don't know if they have the hole.
I'd probably call a clutch mfr to double check the clearance. I'm not really that shure about the .030 clearance after thinking about it. .030 to .060 should be good.
A new disc will have fuzz on it and will drag till it's broken in. You won't be able to get by with a small clearance with a new disc.

What did you come up with on you bell housing or have you had time to???? Just asking. pdq67
memcgraw Oct 30th, 00, 11:00 AM Paul,
I adjusted it a little more, basically getting the clutch fork at right angles to the shaft. Didn't work on it last weekend but I'll probably put everything back in this coming weekend. Got my driveshaft the other day and my radiator.
Is it possible to have too much angle on the ball stud?
