View Full Version : Thorley port coverage ?
RickD Feb 9th, 05, 12:35 PM I really like the Doug's/Thorley tri-Y for all the reasons , especially fit. For those of you who are using this design, did the header ports tolerate much tweaking to match your heads. I spoke to Doug's who told me the primaries are 1 5/8" oval which gives approx 1.48 or so ID(?). My protopline ports are 1.4Wx1.34H approx. I just don't know how much I can tweak the oval header port to better match. I'm deciding whether to return the Hedman 1 3/4 which are not as advertised and probably less power steering friendly. Thanks!
1968camaro123 Feb 10th, 05, 02:44 PM i have the thorleys on trickflow 195s and i just slapped them on. seemed to fit fine
zdld17 Feb 10th, 05, 03:22 PM What part # , what brand and tube size please.
RickD Feb 11th, 05, 02:39 AM Although I don't have the part# in front of me, they're 1 5/8" oval pipes. That's the outside diameter so the ID is 1 5/8 -(2*.065) according to them. That seems too small for adequate coverage with my rectangular ports..
kip Feb 11th, 05, 11:28 AM Rick,
i feel your pain. i also really want to run the tri-ys (375Y or 376Y1)on my 200 toplines. i need the clearance they offer. i think my exhaust ports may be a bit larger than the 180's. i dont have the dimensions here at work.
my plan now is to get them bare and weld some 1.75 tube right by the flange. then i'll port them to match the head and have them coated locally. some extra work but it should be better than my old flattened hookers. maybe there will be enough meat to port them without adding the 1.75 tube? i'm not sure.
too bad they dont make them in 1.75 !
good luck and post on what you decide to do...

zdld17 Feb 11th, 05, 11:46 AM Kip, arent thos tri y's 1 1/2 tubes? Saw those ,, look kool the way they dump at angle but the tube size got me.
RickD Feb 11th, 05, 12:26 PM I spoke to a fellow named Paul at Doug's. He is sending me a tracing of the tri-Y header flange and also of the gasket. He said that the tri-Y is 1 5/8 but the flanged end is larger. We'll see. Seemed very interested in helping. I carefully explained that my ports are 1 3/8 x 1 3/8 and I didn't see how they would work but he felt the tri-Y would cover. If the tracings don't support that, I'm getting their 4-tube 1 3/4 which definately will. I'll post back when I have the tracing and can verify fitment. I also explained that I was frustrated with claims of fitment (especially power steering ) and wasn't going to do any pipe denting. Again, he said there should be no problems if I have the correct engine mounts and no twisted frame. Stay tuned.
bigdawginva Feb 11th, 05, 02:57 PM Rick, a month ago you asked me to measure my Thorleys before they went on the motor http://www.camaros.net/forum/ultimatebb.php/topic/4/9650.html#000000
Were these not the measurements you were looking for? BTW, they cover the Kenny D's fine.
RickD Feb 11th, 05, 03:40 PM Hey, Bob. Yes they are! Now I'm trying to make sure they'll work with my rectangular ports. Since the tri-y's, I believe are oval, I want to see if I can avoid any reversion in the corners(I may be getting carried away here!). The tracing will help. I'm getting comfortable that I can do some tweaking but want to check. Aren't your head ports rounded at the top? Love this stuff.
bigdawginva Feb 11th, 05, 04:54 PM Yes, Rick, they are D-shaped; 1.35 x 1.5.

kip Feb 22nd, 05, 09:32 AM Rick,
any word on the header flange tracing ?
from Bob's measurements and Paul saying the flanged ends are larger than 1.625", i'm hoping they will work with minimal work to the flange.
my exhaust port is the same as yours, 1.4" wide by 1.34" tall rectangle.
thanks
RickD Feb 22nd, 05, 10:02 AM I got the tracing. For a perfect fit, I'd need to do some grinding in each corner. For now I'm making do with my 9 year old Hedmans. Interestingly - my old pipes are the same part # (65003) as the new ones I sent back. The old ones clear nicely so I painted them. The port coverage is good too. The new ones hit the PS badly and had a distorted oval shape. Old ones are rectangular. I can fax you the tracing if desired. Just shoot me a phone number.
kip Feb 22nd, 05, 10:17 AM Rick,
a copy of that tracing would be great. i will email you my fax number here at work. glad to hear your older hedman's are goin to work out. saves ya some coin too !
