: 5 or 6 Spd in 67?

Is there somewhere out there information about swapping in a 5 or 6 speed manual tranny out of a 80s/90s Camaro into a first-gen Camaro? I'd like to make this change, since my Camaro has no tranny; but I've already bitten off more than I can chew on this car anyway and would prefer to read someone else's experiences with clutch linkages, etc.

Thanks!

One of the rags did a nice article on the install. I think it was a 67/68 camaro. I will dig it up and scan it if you wish.

Check this article out. It shows a Tremec 5 speed overdrive step by step installation in a 68 Camaro. I have installed one in my 67 and others on this board have installed them in 68's. It uses the factory bellhousing, flywheel, pressure plate, clutch fork, clutch linkage and comes with a shifter. http://www.fortesparts.com/sept99schevy.html

As per most of magazine stuff there are no prices listed in the article and on Forte's website. Does anyone know what the cost of the tranny is? I wouldn't mind trying to blow one up behind my 427 http://www.camaros.net/forum/cool.gif Especially since I may have toasted my M-21 http://www.camaros.net/forum/eek.gif

My Fortes Tremec TKO ran $1,925. I believe the 3550 is $1,625, but not sure. However, you will definitely need the TKO which is rated at 525 ft-lbs of torque.

Fortes has just redone their website and it has current prices. They are at www.fortesparts.com (http://www.fortesparts.com)

Do an archive search in this forum on Tremec and you will find some good threads on the subject of putting a Tremec in a first gen. Several contributors to this forum have successfully put Tremecs in their cars but it is usually a little more involved than the Super Chevey article indicates. And I have discovered that there are some unique issues with 67s.

If you go with the Tremec, I would buy the X-member, speedo drive and yoke in addition to the transmission. The optional shifter that moves the stub forward about 1.5" really helps with console compatibility. It adds $269 to the price. I still had to move my console back about 1.5" to better center the shifter in the console shift plate. I would not buy the back-up switch as the stock one that comes with the tranny is fine.

On the x-member, Fortes has had some quality problems but they are getting better. They are basically a modified TH400 cross member. A unique problem on 67s is that the frame is only drilled for a 3" on center cross member and the TH400 is 2.5" on center. 68s (and I assume 69s) have holes to accomodate both 2.5 and 3 inch center cross members. I just have to drill some extra holes.

I don't have mine all the way done but pretty close. I just went with the 3550 even thought I am running a 435 HP, 500 ft. lb. 383, but then I don't expect to flog it all that often.

Mark, I don't mean to sound like an idiot.. but not only do I not have access to a copy of Camaro Performers, I don't think I've ever heard of it/them... I assume it's a magazine; is it one that I'd see in a Barnes & Noble, or is it one I'd have to subscribe to to get?

derekf,

Come to our club cookout on September 30th and talk to Bill Roy. He has a Tremec overdrive in his 69 big block car. I am pretty sure he will be driving it here so you could get a good look at what he did.

It is also featured in September's newsletter, being mailed early this week.
