My friends uncle just purchased a '38 chevy(I haven't seen it yet) and they are having trouble identifying the engine. The headgasket they ordered for that application does not fit.
It is a straight six. casting number on rear of engine is 699818L stamped number on side of block next to distributor is KAA35652.
Are there any sites with casting # info on straight sixes? I only found v8 info.
Thanks in advance, Ray

I think they only made the old stove-bolt six in 216" and a 235" sizes??
I do know the newer sixes are 194", 230", 250" car and 292" P/U engines

thanks pdq67! I have been searching for casting numbers online for the inline 6 and nothing even comes close. Not sure if its a typo on my friends part.
It may be a newer engine that was put in as a replacement. The parts store can't figure it out so I was just surfing to see what the web would have.
Thanks, Ray

On my old 250 I6 I believe the year (68 in my case) was cast by itself into the block on the passenger side. Knmowing the year would help you setermine if it is the original '38 engine or not.

Are you sure you are reading the number "right-side-up" and could the "K" be and 'H' ?
It could be 1818669, which is a casting number for a 216 six used in 1938.
1938 serial numbers start at HA_1001 for the Master Deluxe Six with Knee-action.
Gasket really didn't change much from 1937 to late 40's.
Check for correct gaskets and info here - http://www.parts123.com/PartFrame.asp?ZTM=cadegiia&GHOME=www.egge.com&TITLE=Egge
Hope this helps.

Eric68, Vintage68 Thanks for the replies!
I got more numbers from my friend.
On the side of the block, distributor area cast# 839770
On the head cast# 838355
According to inliners.org the block is a 216cid used in 42-53. no info on head from them.
According to hemmings.com the block is used from 42-47. But the head comes up as "37 early all"
Maybe its the original head on a newer bottom half  . By the way this engine was running/driven home.
Vintage68 you maybe right about the numbers being read upside down.Until I see it for my self i'm just going by what they gave me over the phone.
Anyway thanks again guys graemlins/thumbsup.gif Ray
