View Full Version : Need help with oil pick-up... 67camss/rs May 20th, 03, 05:15 PM installation. Read that there should be a 1/4 inch gap between bottom of oil pan and pick-up.What is the best/easiest way to check this? Thanks. :D Vintage 68 May 20th, 03, 07:53 PM Truthfully - I don't even bother with the 1/4" or whatever = you just need the pick-up to be off the bottom of the pan. I put the pick-up on the pump 'loosely' (or just inserted into the pump enough to hold and not fall out) and at an angle greater than normal - then I install the pan WITH OUT THE GASKETS - this will push the pick-up into a position that will clear the pan and still be pretty close to the bottom. If you want to push it down for a little more clearance that would be fine, some people put a small nut on the pick-up to space for the pan - but I don't think it's necessary. Now set the pick-up all the way into the pump and then remove the cover - take out the pressure relief spring and tack weld the pick-up in place so it stays put! Put the spring back in, bolt the pump cover to the pump and reassemble pan with gaskets and you will have plenty of clearance for the pick-up. Post back if you have any questions. Good luck on your project. Codi May 21st, 03, 06:39 AM I use the "measure twice, set once" rule. Using a flat edge across the oil pan rails, I measure to the bottom of the pan. Using this measurement, I set the pickup to the proper depth (height), put a plastic bag over the screen, and place a doughnut of putty (playdough, clay) over the screen. I set the pan on, making sure it is sitting properly, remove the pan, cut the putty in half at its thickest point, and adjust the pickup as needed. I look for 3/8 to 1/4 of pan clearance. I know this is tedious, but you only get one chance. When all is said and done, I spot weld the pickup to the pump. Never had a failure in 30 years. 67camss/rs May 21st, 03, 04:33 PM Appreciate the info, guys. Will give these methods a try this weekend. From what I read ,I don't see there will be any problems. Will post back if I run into any trouble. graemlins/beers.gif |
