Im curious as to how much hp my 700R4 tranny can take? Im looking to put a different engine into my car cause my 327 is numbers matching.. and since i want to supercharge it i dont want to ruin mah 327 http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif. So.. could how much hp could my 700R4 withstand?

I remember reading that 2004Rs could withstand a great deal more?... also what years were good for the 2004Rs?

Thanks for the info!

Check out this website, Bowtie Overdrives, located in Hesperia. A lot of good info.

Hey guy,I have a 430 horse 383 and a full tilt 700r4 with 3.73 rear gears,I have about 25,000 miles on it,Very hard miles including some drag starts, but mostly high speed autobahn runs,it has served me better than i ever thought it would,I did look into it this winter because I had my engine out for some changes and my brake band was starting to flake apart from heat fatigue, other than that the thing looked like it had not been used at all! from the other posts I have read ,I think anything above 450ft.lbs will give you trouble if you drag it much.Keep in mind I'm not an expert though! good luck

The 200R4 from the Buick GN T-Types are good ones. They all can be modified, which is your best bet. A stock 200 or 700 will hold up find if you're easy on it.

Well, the horsepower isn't really what you need to worry about, it's the torque. Torque is what causes things to break. A 700 will stand up to about 500 ft/lbs of torque if you aren't too hard on it. If you motor is more like 450 torque and the tranny is well built, it is going to take a lot to break it. They are sweet trannies, and that first gear is like a night an day difference over a th400/350. If you are planning on making any drag passes, you will want to stay under a 3.73 gear or be ready to dish out a good ammount of money of traction devices(slicks, caltracs, etc.) Good luck though

Well, torque comes with horsepower, provided it is geared correctly.
