: 383 questions
xntp_69 Oct 9th, 00, 11:01 AM HI, I bought a NEW 383, and I am trying to
figure out what the best head+cam combo there is...
The motor so far is:
team g intake
chevy 350 block bored .60 over
400 crank/dampener
10.3.1 keith black hypereutectic pistons
isky 280/480 mag cam
1.6 roller tip rockers
chevy 2.02/1.60 heads
high volume oil pump
douber roller chain
chevy pink rods/springs
fully balanced/blue printed
Yes, it's a complete motor, but I want more power, but i don't know what the best heads/cam that i can buy...I want to go roller as well, for the cam..
I have a 69 camaro, with a 4 speed, (m22)
I am keeping the 4 speed and i have a NOS cheater kit, can i use this with hypereutectic pistons
thanks for any help!
squarles Oct 9th, 00, 11:31 AM What rods do you have? If you have the short 400 rods I would be careful pushing them too hard.
I would call Keith Black and get their opinion on the pistons. I always heard not to put more than a 150 shot of nitrous on them.
A few years back I had a 383 (BTW yours is actually 388 at .060 over) with 350 rods and TRW forged flat tops at zero deck height. 64cc 492 angle plug heads with a good port job. It had a Chet Herbert roller with 267/271 duration @.050 and .617/.621 lift(Herbert #C6G). Victor jr intake, turbo 350 with 8" ATI converter. It went 11.20's in a 3280lb vega with G60 McCreary street tires through the mufflers. It went 9.98 with a 200 shot of nitrous.
There are plenty of good aftermarket heads out there. I like the Dart for a steel head and the AFR for aluminum.

xntp_69 Oct 9th, 00, 11:35 AM hmmm, the rods i think are gm pink 350, that have been cut down.

I know I'm getting off the subject, but I don't believe the angle plug 492's were 64cc. From the information I've found, Chevy didn't make an angle plug 492 for production vehicles. The angle plug 492's were made as a service head available over the counter and had 72cc chambers. Crane Cams bought some of these from Chevy and sold them as Fireball heads. These particular heads will have Crane stamped into them. As for 492's on production vehicles, they were made in 64,67 and 69cc's. If you cc's the heads, and found them to be 64cc, please correct me. We have a set of them on a 350.

squarles Oct 9th, 00, 12:32 PM I never cc'd the heads. They were small chambers, I just assumed they were 64cc.

davidpozzi Oct 9th, 00, 06:02 PM If you are using the 5.7" pink rods they need to be ground for clearance on the inside rod bolt head, or they will hit the cam.
Make shure before you balance the engine.

pdq67 Oct 11th, 00, 03:45 PM Shouldn't a medium port size real good flowing head be used in a 383/388 to help build torque all the way through the rpm range??
Instead of a big head used for high rpm horsepower?? pdq67
big gear head Oct 13th, 00, 10:21 AM If you use a roller cam, get one that is compatable with a steel distributor gear. I have to replace my bronse gear about every 1000 miles.

lnjstreetrods Oct 13th, 00, 09:21 PM Hey Big Gear,
How much oil pressure are you running? If you are replacing the gear every 1000 miles, all that brass is going to kill your bottom eng.
I'm not being smart at all,but if you don't lower your oil pressure it will lower it's self when the bottom end gives up from the brass.
All roller cams are steel billet requiring brass gear.

JohnZ Oct 14th, 00, 08:16 AM Crane roller cams are now available with iron distributor drive gears, 100%-compatible with iron distributor driven gears, as an extra-cost option. All that bronze won't help your bottom end any, and magnetic plugs and filter bands won't pick it up either.
