What is the best way to remove old gaskets from a carburetor that need to be rebuilt. Does it need to go through a parts washer?

Since the EPA has deemed Methylene Chloride a HAP you really need to dip it in a can of Berryman's Carb. Cleaner b/c I dipped one in a combination of 50/50 MEK and Acetone AND never removed hardly anthing from it.

Berrymans still has Methylene Chloride and Cresol in it with a water cover so is still the BAD for air pollution but "GOOD" STUFF, at least to me...

I second the Berrymans Carb bucket. I've been using this stuff (B-12) since 1970 and have found nothing better. Dissassemble, place in the bucket for a few hours, scrub if needed, blow dry, and reassemble. B-12 in the 16oz can is also great for icky gooey gas tanks and as a general parts cleaner.

Those old brown gaskets on holleys flat out suck. My carberator has a metering plate on the secondary side and I ended up bending my separator plate trying to get the gaskets loose. Definately soak em loose and don't try to scrape or pry them loose. Carb cleaner is great stuff, but even a blast of B12 or WD40 every few hours for a day or two is bound to help a lot. If you're dealing with a holley, be sure to by the blue silicon gaskets. I spray all my carb gaskets and rubber parts with silicon upon assembly to keep them from sticking in the future.
