big gear head Oct 9th, 01, 04:03 PM Sorry, I didn't mean to post twice.
sneakey pete Oct 9th, 01, 06:10 PM Boy thats been a long time coming!!!
Is there much info on it out yet?
Like 3 series, 2 series?
I was reading somewhere that new Eaton positractions come stock with carbon fiber clutches and 400 lb. springs, do you know if that is these new 8.2's or more for 4x4's?
Do you know the price yet?
You know me 8000 questions, but I have to ask 'cause I' brain dead when it comes to rearends (on vehicles that is)
joesmith69 Oct 9th, 01, 07:29 PM Does anyone else make posi units for the 8.2"?

boodlefoof Oct 10th, 01, 05:49 AM Auburn makes a posi for the 8.2'' I run one, but have never tried any other brand unit to compare it to. It seems to work fine.
big gear head Oct 10th, 01, 01:31 PM As far as I know all of the new Eaton posi units have the carbon fiber clutches in them. I will have one of the new 8.2 units in my hands tomorrow. They are 3 series and should be about $350. Auburn and US Gear make posi units for the 8.2 also. They are not rebuildable like the Eaton. When they wear out you throw them away.

HwyStarJoe Oct 11th, 01, 03:23 AM Music to my ears!! I knew I held onto that 8.2" for a reason. Now, if Santa would remember me this year, I may finish the rearend.

J early Oct 12th, 01, 12:12 PM Does anyone know what these can handle for horsepower? Are your ring and pinion going to be the weakest link? Goodbye!
big gear head Oct 12th, 01, 03:27 PM I built a 8.2 for a '69 Camaro with a 383 and a 4 speed. This rear end has not been seriously abused, but it has made several hard passes down the drag strip with no problems. The car busted a Muncie but didn't hurt the rear end. There is also another '69 Camaro running around here with a stout 406 with N2O on it. It has a automatic and a 8.2 and the rear end has held up well with slicks. It is hard to tell what they will handle.

englemac Oct 13th, 01, 01:12 AM Great! Where can I get one?!
I was saving my dough for a complete 12 bolt posi rearend, but that was going to run me at least 1500! Since I'm only running a mild crate motor that I don't thrash (too much), I think my 8.2 will do. So who has them?
One word of caution before you stick an 8.2" rear behind any kind of serious torque... It will break sooner or later! I didn't think I would have much problem with my factory posi 8.2" unit when I put in my big block as the motor wasn't built for big numbers. Earlier this summer on my way to work, I started off from a stopsign in a normal kind of way, not giving it much gas at all, when this terrible noise suddenly brought me to a halt. The posi unit had been torn in half right down the middle! After examining it, you could tell that not all the damage was done at one time, but that it had been cracking for some time. It finally gave up. Now don't get me wrong, I didn't baby this thing, but with only 2:73 gears and street tires, I didn't figure I had much to worry about... WRONG! So just be warned that if you have any kind of strong torque or really sticky tires, I would go ahead and step up to the 12 bolt or better.

HwyStarJoe Oct 15th, 01, 04:17 AM What, if any, warranty would apply? I mean, if I bought the new Eaton unit for my 8.2" and had you build it for me Freddy, then I beat the p*ss out of the car and it broke? Or if I bought the Eaton unit and had a local shop do the work? I know I'd have to ask the shop obviously. Does Eaton have any kind of warranty restrictions?
Thanks!
big gear head Oct 15th, 01, 05:34 PM I'll have to check on the waranty. I haven't had a problem with a Eaton yet, but I have had problems with Auburn and Power Trax. They replaced the parts, but they didn't like it! I can tell you that this new Eaton is built stronger than the original.
