A friend in my area is considering the sale of his 2.02 186 casting cylinder heads. They are off a running engine, and complete.
What would be a fair asking price?

If they have had the 2.02 valves added later, maybe $400-$500 for the pair.

If they are factory equipped with the big valves they have additional machining in the combustion chamber and they are worth considerably more to a Vette or Z/28 resto fanatic. This is a difficult machinig operation to have done as most machine shops have never heard of it and do not know how to do it properly. I have not seen any trade hands lately but I know they are worth a lot more that way.

He has had these heads in storage for 20 years (or more). Last spring he bolted them to his son's 327 and used them all summer for drag racing. The son wants to upgrade to a better set of heads for drag racing.
They do have the 2.02 valves, and he believes them to be true Z/28 heads. What type of additional machining do I look for in the combustion chamber?

If memory serves they were cast in Dec 68??

The combustion chamber areas around the intake valves are machined using a contour stone or cutter to "bowl-shape" cut relieve them so the valves can breath better, otherwise, the 1.94" intake valved head with just the 2.02" valves installed actually breath poorer then the 1.94" heads!!

You can see the smooth cut if you look and feel the chambers around the big valves if this has been done stock to the heads. My stock, big valve -461 heads are done this way too!

And the chamber cc's went from like 62/64 to 66cc's due to this small cut!! I measured mine so I would know my compression!
