: flywheel/bellhousing help please!
daywin98 Jul 17th, 00, 06:01 PM People...I am restoring my 1967 SS 350 Camaro. It is equipped with the Muncie 4 speed. When I was putting (trying) to put the bellhousing on, it would not clear the flywheel. (caught the teeth on the bottom) The flywheel is right at 14 Inches tooth to tooth. The Bellhousing is a standard aluminum Chevrolet bellhousing. I need to know what the correct flywheel and bellhousing is for this configuration. Also, should it have an 11 inch clutch? Or 10.5 inch clutch? Any and all help would be appreciated!
davidpozzi Jul 17th, 00, 06:34 PM 10.5 clutch and small flywheel is what you should be using.
I highly recomend the 15 lb nodular iron flywheel. We put one on a 302 thinking it might loose torque but it gained torque and response. It makes sense when you think about it. Why accelerate all that weight every time you punch it?

daywin98 Jul 17th, 00, 06:38 PM So I should be using the 153 tooth 12 3/4" inch flywheel and not the 168 tooth 14" inch flywheel, coorect? Thanks for your help!
camcojb Jul 17th, 00, 06:39 PM You have the small bellhousing made for the 153 tooth (10 1/2" clutch) but you have the larger 11" (168 tooth) flywheel. You will need to change to the larger bellhousing or an aftermarket scattershield to use that flywheel or switch to the smaller flywheel and a 10 1/2" clutch. One additional option is that McLeod makes an 11" pressure plate that is in a 10 1/2" hat to fit the smaller flywheel. This allows an 11" clutch on a small flywheel.

daywin98 Jul 17th, 00, 06:53 PM Ok, that helps...seeing that I have a fresh 11 inch clutch and pressure plate...what would be the cheapest fix? Go with the bigger bellhousing? Or the smaller flywheel? Which is easier to find? Do you have either one? <G> I will go with a new 10.5 clutch if neccessary but want everything to bolt up and operate correctly. Thanks for all your help!
Jonesy Jul 17th, 00, 08:47 PM The 11 inch clutch takes the 621 Bellhousing.
I have seen them run in the range of $50 to $100. I just bought a powdercoated one for $50 and I think that's all they are worth.
They also should be fairly easy to find. Dont let anyone BS you and say they are "rare".

cmrib Jul 18th, 00, 05:15 PM If you have the extra cash? Put a scatter sheild on. It is good insurance for yourself and your motor. I have seen clutches explode destroying blocks, oil pans, firewall, feet, etc.

davidpozzi Jul 18th, 00, 05:58 PM Can you exchange the clutch?
Your engine will rev quicker and accelerate faster if you have a smaller flywheel.

Steve R Jul 18th, 00, 06:45 PM If you read the instructions that come with a scattershield it states that you need to have it checked to it is centered to the flywheel. To do this you will likely need to pull the engine and take it to a machine shop so they can check it with a dial indicator. The cheapest way is to get a bellhousing for an 11" flywheel. I work for a parts store and we would not take the pressure plate back if it had been bolted on, since we would not be able to sell it.

daywin98 Jul 18th, 00, 07:00 PM thanks again people! Since I'm building it to drive, not race, and after finding out it is a 10.5 inch clutch and pressure plate...I think I'll just search out a 12 3/4 (smaller) flywheel to fit the clutch and bellhousing I already have. Any leads anyone? Thanks again for all your help!
