I've read through the archives and I'm putting up a new post to see if any new manufacturers have popped up lately. I have a '68 RS Conv. w/ factory PS & A/C. The A/C seems to be the problem w/ manufacturers.

I bought a set of DynoMax 3/4 headers (Part #86118) after a recommendation by DynoMax Tech support. It was their opinion this was the only Dynomax header to fit a 67-9 factory A/C car. HOWEVER, #3 is all over the P/S box. For other reasons, this header is going away & buying another set.

I'm leaning towards Doug Thorleys based on the archives (sounds like hookers SC hang too low for my taste). Is this a good choice or has somebody new popped up that offers a well fitting header for a '68, mild performance small block, A/C, P/S car? You'd think after 34 years, they'd have this figured out!!

THANKS!!!!!!

Is your car a small block or big block?

Did you buy Dynomax 1&3/4 headers?

I was thinking about the Dynomax 1&5/8 headers myself.

small block. I really didn't want to go bigger than 1 5/8 primaries to keep low-end torque up (it will be 95% street driven car). 1 3/4 tubes on my 350 will cost power below 3500 rpm.

Oddly, the 1 3/4 tubes seems to fit fine (according to the archives). You would think smaller tubes would fit better.

Sorry - the rest of your question:

I bought part #86118 & they 3/4 length, 1 1/2" primary, 2 1/2" collector header. Dynomax Tech told me the 1 5/8" header will not fit an A/C car - tube interference with the A/C box.

If you read through the archives on the header issue I think you will also find that which set of motor mounts and frame stands are installed in the car will have an impact on fitment of different manufacturers' headers.

If I recall correctly it seemed like the Headman and Hooker headers fit well with the 302/350 mounts/stands and the Dynomax fit well with the 307/327 mounts/stands. It also plays a part in whether an HEI distributor will fit without hammering the firewall for clearance.

I'm hoping to drop in my new Vortec head 355 in the next week or so. I had an old set of Dynomax headers that had been hammered to fit around the P.S. box. The car had the 302/350 mounts/stands. I bought a new coated set of Dynomax (#86001) and have switched to the 307/327 mount/stand setup. I'll post the results when the engine goes in.

Unfortunately, neither hookers or hedmans fit A/C cars (at least according to their websites). That what's kicking my butt.

The Hooker competition (not super competition) header part# 2451HKR (2451-1HKR for ceramic coated) should fit according to their catalog if you use their A/C bracket part# 10925 for the left side or part# 10926 for the right side. They won't fit angle plug heads. The primary tubes are 1-5/8" X 30" with 3" collectors.

Does anybody have experience with this "Competition" header (see above)?

The Hooker Super Competition 1 5/8" fit OK. The drivers side is very good. The passenger may require some clearancing around the idler arm. I run a flap of heat wrapping to protect the evaporator box from the #8 tube. They fit angle plug heads (GM) very well. I highly suggest fitting them to the car first then having them ceramic coated. The coating helps keep the evaporator box from roasting along with helping to reduce underhood temperatures.

I don't understand this problem. With so many of us having problems doing this type of thing, I don't understand why the header mfg's can't/don't/won't address this. Given the fact the subframe is used not only on the Camaro, but also Nova's, you'd think they would recognize the demand for something that would fit these circumstances/swaps/configurations. Another frustrating thing is the angled plug situation. Aren't most of the new crate engines angled plug heads? With more and more of those crate engines in use you would hope someone would build a header to fit easily.
