View Full Version : Hosting Videos...who ?
DOUG G Feb 19th, 05, 02:38 AM I have Webshots for my pics and was looking to find a site that hosts MPG's or WMV's ? Anyone ?
My camera does Vids and just got a camcorder that takes discs.
camaroman7d Feb 19th, 05, 07:02 AM Doug I asked this same question a few months ago. I didn't have any luck. I also searched the web for "video hosting". I didn't get anywhere with that either. Let me know what you find out, please.
djunod Feb 19th, 05, 07:08 AM You basically just need a place that lets you store files... then if you convert your videos to streaming .wmv's then it's all "magic" (no special software needed on the host side).
You can download "Windows Media Encoder" for free from microsoft.com. It lets you convert .mpg files to streaming .wmv. It also allows you to extract just the audio for .wma etc... like if you want to just show off your engine sound.
djunod Feb 19th, 05, 07:11 AM Here's a sample...
Casual Corvette Parade (http://www.macoshark.com/wmv/)
Just click on the link shown to almost immediately start playing the video. That file was a 33 mb .mpg, Windows Media Encoder converted it to a 7 mb streaming video file that starts playing immediately.
CFunK Feb 19th, 05, 07:52 AM David,
Interesting, Firefox downloaded it and IE6 streamed it. Wonder why?
camaroman7d Feb 19th, 05, 07:59 AM David,
I understand how it works. The problem is finding a "host" site. The file has to be stored on a server some where and linked. When I went out and attempted to "rent" space on a server I had no luck finding a simple solution.
aonghus Feb 19th, 05, 08:52 AM I can host some vids for people, just keep the sizes reasonable.
PM me
DOUG G Feb 19th, 05, 09:11 AM Ok, talked to a friend who sent me this E-mail...
I use a company called www.smugmug.com (http://www.smugmug.com)
It will let you load up to a 8MB movie clip, one at a time, and its pretty cheap too,I also load all my pics for my site through them.
Heres a few more. I might buy into one of these later on,some of my videos are over 8MB(approx 30-40 seconds) and I'd like to have a server that will allow longer clips.

camaroman7d Feb 20th, 05, 04:40 PM Thanks for the info!!
Dave you should have mail.
CFunK Feb 20th, 05, 07:12 PM Barefoot. Just be careful hosting videos for others. Your hosting plan may include enough hard drive space BUT it may not cover the amount of bandwidth those videos will eat up when a whole bunch of people start downloading them.
Barefoot Dave Feb 21st, 05, 02:52 AM Thanks Funk...I'm familiar and I have plenty of bandwidth available. That won't be an issue...but thanks for the heads up! :)
