I know not all carriers are the same. How do you tell the difference? My friend has 2 67 12 bolts. Both peg legs. 1 has 3:08's, the other has 3:56's. He wants to put a new carrier in 3:08 rear to put back in 67 SS car. If I buy the carrier and pay to have his 3:08 put back together, he'll give me the rearend with 3:56's. But I think I'll buy a posi carrier for 3:56 rear, and give him the carrier out of it. Are they all the same series?

Lets dig into this a little deeper.

Let me guess. The carrier size? I've heard there's a 3 series and a 4 series for camaro chevelle and nova 12's. True?

Steve,
Below are the three carriers:
above 3.08
3.08 thru 3.73
4.10 and lower

You should be able to swap carriers and the middle one is available from Eaton (OEM) again. http://www.eaton.com/product/index.html

pdq,

Truck 12-bolt rearends have a TOTALLY different R&P than car 12-bolts. The truck pinion diameter is 1.438" versus the car's 1.625" diameter pinion. What this means is the car 12-bolt is much stronger than the truck. The car 12-bolt has an oval shaped rear cover, whereas the truck has an irregular shaped cover, it dips on the top and bottom.

Also, the truck 12-bolts were never put in cars. If a car has a 12-bolt, it is most likely a 1.625" pinion with an oval shaped cover, unless someone has swapped them. Hope this helps. Take care.

69SSRS,

Thanks for the info on the difference btween rearends. I would a thought that since a truck gets worked by hauling and pulling stuff that it would have the stronger rearend. pdq67
