: Steering box
charlesc Mar 31st, 00, 02:06 PM I have read post in the past on different ratio steering boxes, I am not sure how to tell what I have, I turned my wheels all the way to the left and it took apoximatly 2&3/4 turns of the steering wheel to go all the way to the right. Do I have a quick ratio or should I look to replace it. Another question is my steering wheel has a little play, is there anyway to adjust it. My friend says the nut on top of the box, but is not sure of how. Thanks for any help.

gheatly Mar 31st, 00, 03:30 PM The procudure for adjusting a power steering box is outlined in the Service Manual. If you don't have one, get one. It's the best $20 or so you will ever spend.

When you get the steering centered, loosen the nut on the top of the steering box, turn the screw down until resistance is felt, tighten the locking nut while holding the screw in place.
If you tighten the screw too much, you will create a stickey spot in the center of the steering wheel travel. The steering will stay put and not follow the steering wheel.
You might think this would not be a problem, but I assure you it will drive you nuts!
The nice thing is it's easy to re adjust it.
If your steering box is not centered correctly for some reason, the tight spot might be slightly to one side.

When I mentioned you should buy the service manual, I meant the Chevrolet Service Manual used by the dealerships. They are avaiable in reprint from most of the Camaro parts sellers.
I have a Chilton's for my 69 too, and the Chevy Service Manual is A LOT better and contains much more information. Also, the Chiltons covers 67-69, while the Chevy Service Manual is specific to your model year. There were many variations among the years and Chiltons just doesn't hit them all.
