: Holley Carb
johnnyr Aug 26th, 00, 06:21 PM Hey I just put a 3310-2 Holley Carb. on my 67 396 Camaro at first it started & ran like a brand new car then late today it got hard to start & won't idle pours the black smoke from the tail pipe! A new fuel filter was installed & a new fuel line when the carb was installed yesterday evening! What could be wrong?

sr71bb Aug 26th, 00, 06:28 PM Sounds like a blown power valve to me. This generally results in an overly rich condition ESPECIALLY when idling. Did the car backfire for any reason???
Holley sells a kit that will prevent the power valves from being blown out. It has a HOLLEY part number of 125-500. It consists of a check valve and a spring with retainer. The installtion will require you to remove the carb from it's base plate to install BUT it does work!!!

DEVIL'S LAKE Aug 26th, 00, 06:40 PM did you check the floats? vent tubes?
mutant 68 Aug 26th, 00, 07:24 PM First check the sight plugs for a high float level. Fuel should be at the bottom of the threads in the primary and the secondary. If it won't adjust down you have a stuck float or a bad needle and seat. Remove the float bowl and clean it, also replace the needle and seat(they're cheap). If that hasn't fixed it check the powervalve. If it's good you probably have a plugged passage in a meetering block or the main body, but this rarely happens. Use carb cleaner and compressed air to clean them out. Whatever you do don't ever run a glass fuel filter!!! Looks kool, but they don't work worth a damn. Holleys have a reputation for plugging the needle and seat, especially with a cheap fuel filter.

johnnyr Aug 28th, 00, 05:09 PM Hey just ran into another promblem on my holley! It has a electric choke on it a the bottom it has a port that sucks all the time it has no affect on the engine! My 600 holley has this with a vacuem line run into a port above the choke but the 3310-2 does not have this port what do I do for this?

lnjstreetrods Aug 28th, 00, 06:54 PM Hey Johnny,
This port is for the older Holley's that used the hot air tube system. The vacuum there draws hot air in, which is not necessary with electric choke. Just plug it so you won't suck dirt into your engine.

IgnitionMan Aug 29th, 00, 05:27 AM johnnyr, DON'T PLUG THAT HOLE COMPLETELY UP, leave a little vacuum air flow. I make a small hole, about .050 or so, in a plug, and install ift in the pull hole. The hole left from not putting the clean air tube on the choke os too large.
FOR ALL - COMPLETELY BlOCKING THE ELECTRIC CHOKE STOVE COIL OFF WILL RESULT IN IT RUNNING TOO HOT AND FAILING. GUARANTEED. It needs a bit of air flow to keep it happy and proper temp.
CarlC Aug 29th, 00, 09:57 AM Iman,
Just to clarify, I have a 3310 with electric choke also. At the 8 o'clock postion next to the thermostat housing (black rotating adjustment cover) there is a threaded connection that appears to originate from the choke housing. Is this the connector that is being reffered to?
Thanks.
Carl

IgnitionMan Aug 29th, 00, 11:30 AM Yes, sir, that's the one. The choke heat element needs a little air flow through it to keep it from overheating and failing, and this is where you need the small oriface. You'll have to mnake it, and there should be a screen already in the fitting as well.
CarlC Aug 29th, 00, 01:33 PM Thanks Iman. I was thought the choke was disengaging too soon. Perhaps this is why??
Also, par for the course, there's no screen in the connection. Is there a Holley service part available, boneyard, or am I stuck making one?

johnnyr Aug 29th, 00, 04:59 PM Hey guys how about it bubblestone from a fish tank it has a small opening on the line side & would filter out anything? I just made a medal line from 3/16 brake line & ran it from the choke to behind the carb & connected it with vacuum hose on each end. Thanks

IgnitionMan Aug 29th, 00, 08:03 PM Not having a filter screen isn't the end of the world.
I usually make a fitting for the screw on cap, so I can run a hose from it to a piece of tubing I have installed into a hole I drilled into the top of the carb. This lets the choke get clean air from inside the air filter, and that ain't bad.
I position the tubing at just below the air filter boss, above the vacuum secondary diapfragm, so it clears if I want to change the spring. The air is supplied in the pass side of the entry to the secondary bore almost at the top of the carb. It just pulls clean air, nothing special.
I am assuming the choke is going to be used. If the choke is not going to be used or have voltage going to it, block the air inlet we are speaking of off completely. Only do the restriction and hose/tube thing if you are going to use the choke.
