1968 Camaro 327, Edelbrock 650cfm carb, Edelbrock intake, cam@.050= 218 intake & 224 exhaust,HEI, headers

I have been having a problem during hard acceleration. As I accelerate at WOT from a stop, the engine almost dies and stops accelerating until I back off the throttle. A little black smoke comes out of the pipes. This happens 40% of the time when the engine is good and hot. Otherwise its ok.

Everything is new on this engine w/ about 3500 miles. Problem started after 2500 miles. I have tried everthing to fix it. Plugs wires, modulator, coil, fuel pump, grounds etc.

Today I pulled the pcv valve hose off the front of the carb and let it whistle a suck air. Amazingly the problem seems to have gone away. The car also idles up alot after the pvc hose is removed.

Any ideas would be great!

Sounds like it's rich.

Try leaning it out 2 jet/metering rod sizes on the primaries, and adjust air mixture screws for highest vacuum.

Way too rich even at idle. Sounds like float level or the power pistons are not being pulled down by manifold vacuum.

Black smoke is a sign of excess fuel burning isn't it
