: Q-Jet/Performer Install

I'm getting ready to install my rebuilt 68 Q-jet on my Edelbrock Performer intake (2101). I am going to buy the carb stud mount kit from Kragen tomorrow. I have one cardboard gasket that came with my rebuild kit and a divorced choke that I bought seperatly. Do I need anything else for my install? I have replaced my powerglide with a 2004r. Do I need to buy any extra linkages? How about a heat shield? I bought both pieces second hand so neither came with instructions. I am trying to use the AIM as much as possible, but the combo of a different trans and aftermarket intake is confusing me. This is my first build, so do not assume I have any idea about what I am doing, 'cause I don't!

You may need a Shiftworks shifter assembly, the proper T.V. cable for your carburator and also will need to do a pressure test. See TV Made Easy by Bowtie Overdrives for set up instructions. http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/

Thanks Kurt,
I bought the TV cable from BTO, I guess I need to RTFM again.
EDIT
I just re-read the install instructions that came with the trans. Looks like I'll use their gaskes and spacer/linkage plate.

George,

I'm going to give that same setup a shot - 2101 with Q-jet but using an '84 700r4. I don't know what differences there are between the two trannies, but why did you get the TV cable from BTO? Did the trans not have one with it?

Mine has the cable and I have a Q-jet bracket for the throttle and kick-down. I'm just not sure that this particular bracket will work for me.

Kurt, is a pressure test something Billy Bobs Transmissions and Live Bait is going to have to do because of special tools, or can a shade tree schmoe do it?

Joe,
BTO sold me the TV cable when I bought the trans. I am learning as I go, but it appears to be the only connection to the carb, I don't see a "kick down linkage" other than the TV cable. I just re read the instructions on the link that Kurt posted, seems pretty straight forward to me. BTO sold me a set of guages when I bought the trans. I can let you borrow them once I am done setting up my trans, when do you think you will be installing yours?

Oh, you bought the trans from them as well. I didn't know that.
So I'm assuming you had to tell them what carb and intake you were going to use so they would supply the correct TV cable and throttle\kick-down bracket, right?
And yes, that's the only connection you need to make besides the lock-out wiring and shifter.

I don't know of any heat shields available for that tranny. There may be.

Guys, I by no means am any form of an expert on the OD transmissions. I too Bought my Complete 2004R Level3 Trans from Bowtie Overdrives just last Xmas 04, and it still is awating its final resting place in my RS. I had to send them a pic of my Rochester carb throttle linkage to get the correct TV cableing and bracketing. Aparently there are several bracketing configurations. I have read the setup and installation procedures and will read it again once or twice again before I get back to that area of my project.
As far as the pressure test goes, from what I have read, it needs to be done to properly set the TV cable. And Yes, dont forget the trans lock up wiring.

GunnerV: Heat Shield ? If you are talking about the carb heatshield, It should not be necessary. But every application is different.

HwyStarJoe: Yes the pressure tests is somethin yer shade tree mechanik could do and should do with a heaper. Err ya cud snd it to Billy Bob if ya wanted to. :beers:

I'm hoping that the combination Q-jet bracket I have will work. I don't see why not because it looks just like the aftermarket brackets I see. Only difference is that it's not adjustable.
George, thanks for the offer of the gauges but it's going to be a while until everything is installed, and I'll just run the car up the street and have my mechanic do the testing.

ARGHHH! Has anyone seen this type of throttle linkage before?!? It appears not to be a standard Q-jet linkage...

It looks like a Rochester part to me. I think that little RP above the number stands for Rochester Products.

That little bluish bracket attached to the throttle bracket looks like a throttle solenoid bump bracket. (If that’s what it’s called). I remember having something like that on my ole 396 67 Elcamino I used to have years ago.
Here's a pic of my carbs linkage. This is the image I sent to BTO

Kurt,
Thanks. I think the guy who sold me the carburetor mixed the float bowl and the throttle bodies from two seperate carbs, because the body numbers match for a '68 camaro with auto trans, but (as you can see) the throttle linkage is different.
This car is killing me...

That is a Manual throttle lever w/Idle stop.

Thanks for the info! At least now I know where it comes from, now I need to find a way to get an auto linkage and try and swap them out.
