View Full Version : Big Block Intakes
Mr. C Oct 11th, 01, 05:57 PM Might sound dumb BUT can you use a bb square port intake #163 with oval port heads I've been told yes and no { this isn't going to be a racer]

MarkM Oct 12th, 01, 05:00 AM I've heard this will work, but I guess it really depends on the brand of intake. It has been discussed over at www.chevelle.com (http://www.chevelle.com) , many times. You might want to look over there, and do a search on the subject.
oger Oct 12th, 01, 06:45 AM It will bolt on. But why oval port manifolds can be found very easily at swap meets. There is a very large port mismatch that has to cause flow problems.
Mr. C Oct 12th, 01, 07:13 AM Did GM make a BB oval port alum. intake in 69?
bruce69camaro Oct 12th, 01, 07:21 AM it looks like GM did make a oval port aluminum intake for a 427/390hp, L-36,in late 1969. it was for a Q-jet. the part number is 3947801.

Mr. C Oct 12th, 01, 07:53 AM Do you know if this intake is the same hieght as a #163.I'm planning on using a cowl ind hood with cowl ind breather and I'm wondering about hood clearence.
JonT Oct 12th, 01, 10:20 AM Mr. C - why not just go with the Performer RPM? Better flowing and it should fit with the cowl hood no problem.
Mr. C Oct 13th, 01, 12:40 AM I was wanting to use a GM intake but I might have to go that route.{Anyone know if the performer or performer RPM and #163 GM intakes are the same height and have the same accessory mounting locations. Thanks Again}

sr71bb Oct 13th, 01, 12:45 AM The Performer RPM is CONSIDERABLY taller than any of the stock GM manifold of the 69 ERA. There can be clearance problems here.
This is helpful:

Mr. C Oct 13th, 01, 10:11 AM Sounds like I'll be using the original cast iron intake. performer rpm too tall /went to Keen Vettes yesterday the 3947801 is for a corvette its damn near flat no rise at all air filter assembley wouldn't come close to meeting hood / still diggin for ideas
oger Oct 13th, 01, 11:24 AM Wrong site opps

67rat Oct 14th, 01, 05:15 PM FYI, I have a Performer RPM in my '67 with a flat hood and no clearance problems. I am using the factory drop air cleaner. No way that it would fit without this...

67rat Oct 14th, 01, 05:35 PM I just looked at the Edelbrock site and saw that it said that the Performer RPM does not fit under a stock. I don't know....mine does. Maybe it doesn't fit with their air cleaner??

JonT Oct 15th, 01, 08:52 AM Mr. C - didn't you say you were going to use a cowl induction hood? The RPM should fit.
Mr. C Oct 15th, 01, 06:53 PM I found out a buddy has a performer rpm in his pile of treasures, I'm going over there in the morning and match it up with my 163 as far hieght goes. I'll let you know Thanks Dave!
SY1 Oct 15th, 01, 09:11 PM Hold on Mr. C! The problem i hear most of the time from BB guys is they want to run a Holley on oval port heads and all the oval factory intakes seem to be for Quadrajets. I know GM did make a cast iron high rise for a Holley and oval port heads in 65 I believe it was. I had two of these intakes years ago. I installed one on a 396 350 horse Chevelle SS and it fit and worked great with the cowl hood. It retained the factory appearance and no one could tell under the cowl air cleaner. I'd really recomend that intake if performance gains while retaining factory appearance is your goal. Sorry I can't remember the part number, I'll see if i can dig it up.
Mr. C Oct 15th, 01, 11:14 PM Hey Thanks SY1
J early Oct 16th, 01, 05:05 AM My 68 required a cowl hood to use the stealth intake I have. With the stock hood the only thing that will fit is a GM low rise intake. All of my measurements were based on the use of a 14" K and N air cleaner that was tall enough to meet the airflow requirements of my engine. And actually I had to go an inch shorter than what was recommended and made up for that with an exstream filter top.
I do not think you will fit an RPM under your cowl hood with the correct air cleaner.
bruce69camaro Oct 16th, 01, 07:36 AM i found a part number for you. 3866948 is an iron oval port intake for a 1966-67 396/427. it states that it was made to be used with a holley carb.
hope this helps.
bruce
