: Header Gaskets
CA420 Jul 22nd, 01, 09:50 AM Anyone that is using Dynomax headers and Edelbrock heads, what gaskets are you using on the headers? I am trying to get mine to seal up but they all seem to leak. Any suggestions?

camaroman7d Jul 22nd, 01, 11:25 AM I do not have the same heads or headers as you, but I run Percy's soft layered aluminum gaskets on my flange and collecter. I have not had a failure out of these at all. The flange gasket is actually not layered it is solid, but very soft aluminum. Is your header matched to your port (shape and size)? If you have heads with a 1 3/4" sqaure port and a header with a 1 5/8" round port it will be hard to get it to seal. If your headers are the same size (or bigger) and shape as the port you should be able to get them to seal.I bought the Percy's gaskets from Summit Racing (I could not find them locally). They are reusable and "blow proof".

jthomas67 Jul 23rd, 01, 07:50 AM I run Edelbrock RPM Heads and DynoMax 1 5/8" headers w/ 6psi boost. My Percy Dead-Soft Aluminum Gaskets cost me $40.00, but they have been installed and re-installed no less than 6 times with ZERO leaks. Good Luck.
gadzooks25 Jul 23rd, 01, 03:30 PM Here is a cheap solution. Soak your header gaskets in water for 30 minutes prior to installation. Drive them and then when the engine cools down torque your headers down again. I did this with my Super Comps to my TFS heads and have had no problems. Justin

racerboy3v Jul 23rd, 01, 08:23 PM simple fix. DAP 100% silicon. 3 bucks at lowes, and you can get many redos out of one tube. Wont blow out either

My75LT Jul 24th, 01, 09:23 AM they sell copper gaskets at checker for like 50 bucks. i have been running those for a year with no leaks at all.
JohnZ Jul 25th, 01, 02:45 PM If you don't use locking bolts (like Stage 8 or ARP NASCAR drilled with safety wire), you WILL get leaky or blown flange gaskets; the short header bolts can't stretch (like the long stock bolts can) to develop and maintain clamping force, and the heat cycles will allow them to loosen. I've used drilled/safety-wired header bolts for over 30 years, never lost a gasket. Next time you're at a show, look at the cars with headers and see how many have loose (or missing) header bolts. The ARP pre-drilled header bolts have the added advantage of a special small 3/8" hex head for better tool access past the header tubes - have used them for years.

racerboy3v Jul 25th, 01, 06:00 PM Maybe it is where i use silicon, or maybe not, but i never have a problem with header bolts backing out. I do use good bolt though (hardened ARP with 7/16 ex head) but i do not dril them for safety wire. I just make sure to retighttn them after the 1st heat cycle while the engine is warm (dont kill the bolts on aluminum heads, you will pull threads!!!)
Maybe I have never experienced a problem because I dont have the squisy gasket, and it is basically a metal to metal seal. Also, thicker header flanges (5/16 - 3/8) helps in keeping it sealed. Less likely to bend and flex that way.

HOTROD69CAMARO Jul 26th, 01, 06:44 AM I tried the copper ones form SCE, they didnt work, wound up putting the asbestos ones that came with the headers and some high temp silcone and so far so good.

69DZ302 Jul 26th, 01, 07:07 AM CA420, When I bought my '69 Z28 it already had Hedman headers on it, and I've had leaks on the drivers side since day one. I've tried new and different gaskets but nothing helped. When I removed the header I put a straight edge across it and found out it was warped. I called Hedman and since they had a lifetime warranty they said to send them back for a new set. I'm waiting on my new set to arrive, and I hope there will be no leaks. Good luck with yours.
