: STRANGE valve adjusting problem...........

Ok I was putting on some 1.6 rockers on my mostly stock 350 today. Got em all on and somewhat adjusted manually then I start it up to adjust em with it running. I got the drivers side done no problem. Then I go to the passenger side and try. To make the story short I couldn't get em right and when I was done only 4 of the 8 where pumping oil to the arms.

They make more noise so it's kinda hard to tell when they start ticking. Maybe it's just cause the engine was getting hot?

PS after the first try I adjusted em again by hand, manually. Then started it and went 1/2 turn down and 1/2 back up and then up a little more. Basically I tryed going all over the place but they still weren't spitting oil.

Any thoughts???

I've got a standard oiling system with a standard pan (windage tray too).

Have your pushrod holes in the heads been clearanced? On many heads, the pushrods will ground out against the bottom of the holes with 1.6 rockers, and the hole in the end of the pushrod will be forced out of alignment with either the hole in the seat in the rocker arm or the seat in the lifter.

They're probably not since I haven't done it. Is it feasible to do it with the heads on? (and intake) I'll look at em tommorrow and see for sure though.

Doesn't really make sence that only 4 on one side would need to be done though.

I thought tonight that maybe those valve springs might be worn or need to be replaced. Maybe they can't handle the extra lift with the 1.6ers? I know they're cheap since it's a store bought rebuild.

JohnZ may be onto something there. No you cannot drill out pushrod holes with the heads on the engine - you'll get shavings inside the engine.

Another thing that you might look into is the valve springs. When I switched to 1.6 rockers I broke a bunch of dampeners (thats the flat looking coil inside the outer spring). They got louder (I have a mechanical cam) when the dampeners crapped out.

Alright here's a twist, I adjusted both the #4s and they were spittin til the engine heated up. I still can't get the #6 intake and #2 exhaust to spit oil. Kinda strange the rest of em will though???

This sucks I guess I'll just leave on the stockers. How can I check the dampers??? Will they just break?

The dampers you have to look at. Mine broke off the last 1/2" of the coil on the bottom. The piece was just laying inside the spring.

You were right Eric I put the stock rockers back on and they pump out about double what the 1.6ers were. I'll just have to wait til I take the heads off, then clearence em. The 1.6s sound mean though.

Just how far would I have to grind on em to clearence em? Should that be the sides of the holes as well? Or just the bottoms.
