I have a 12 bolt in my Camaro non posi with 3.31's,is it possible to convert to posi and what would be the cost. I read somewhere that you need the right carrier to do this JUSTANSS

You would need to buy either a stock posi carrier (rebuild it w/new clutches) or an aftermarket one, you could get either a posi, locker or a spool. You would also need new bearings(I wouldn't try re-using the old ones) and I would recommend c-clip eliminators. Also the back lash would need to be set. Hope this helps.

If I could offer some advice. If you haven't done this before, have an expert do it. The first and last one I did was done by the book aqnd lasted about 2000 miles. When there right, they'll last for ever

Thanks for the info, I would like to try this on my own,I feel I have good mech. skills, but I do need a good manual on how to accomplish this. Know of any?

67az,
Look into getting a service or overhaul manual for your car, one of those details how to do it. Also, Jegs sells a video by Richmond that shows how to do it. It's not the greatest, but it helps. www.jegs.com (http://www.jegs.com) look under the books/videos section. It is like $15 or so.
Here is a web site: http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/suspension/posi.html and another one: http://www.2quicknovas.com/happyrearends.html that give some ideas...

For pricing, that depends if you have someone do it or not. The cheapest place to buy an Eaton posi is: http://www.tomsdifferentials.com/cat3.htm for $267 for a 12 bolt. Their install kit is very good and runs $100. That should pretty be everything you need except for axle bearings and seals.

Good luck,
Bill C.

You will need a dial indicator with a magnetic base to check the backlash before you remove anything from the inside of the rear end. You will have to remove the cross shaft, C clips and axles. Mark the bearing caps so you can get them back on EXACTLY the same way they came off. Remove the caps and the differential. Swap the ring gear from the old differential to the new posi and torque the bolts to 45 foot pounds. Have the new Timken bearings pressed on the posi and reinstall it into the housing. You will need a good shim set to set the backlash and bearing preload. This will take patients because it will need to be assembled and disassembled a few times to get it right. After you get the backlash and preload set you can torque the bearing cap bolts to 60 foot pounds and reinstall the axles, C clips and cross shaft. Be sure to get the shaft retaining bolt tight and put a little blue Lock Tight on it. Put on the cover and fill it with any 80W90 with the GM additive #1052358 or Amsoil 75W90 Series 2000 oil with no additive. It will need 2 quarts.

BGH,

Since you're checking the backlash prior to disassembly are you saying to set it back to those specs instead of a new gear spec. (I'm thinking you'll say yes.) And even if it's out more than standard tolerenace.

Yes, set it back exactly as it was. It will not be the same as a new gear. You will probably find that it will be around .010 to .014.
