Thank you for your response. I will check it out. I forgot to mention it is a 5 speed manual. Does that make a differance?

no it doesnt make a difference it should open under a load

There is also an adjustment for the secondaries that controls when they open. It is spring loaded so it will only open when the demand is enough on the engine. If you turn that screw(allen head wrench I think) it will allow them to open sooner. But that could result in too much fuel being dumped in and you'll get a bog. It's worth trying.

Rak,
How do you know they are not opening ??? Most motors will not draw enough air without a load on them to open the secondary air valves on the Q-jet. So if you are trying to get them to open with the car in neutral, and not moving, it will probably never happen.

Devil's Lake - you just lost any credibility you had by that last post... Very uncalled for and childish.

Hey Rak,
Let me try, With the engine off remove the air cleaner assy. Get over the top of the carb with a light, open the top flaps and look down the throat of the secondaries to see if the butter flies are opening when you open the throttle all the way open. If not Devil's lake said check the choke, well here's how. There is a little dog leg looking lever on the passengers side rear of the carb that locks the secondaries out until engine is warm be sure it moves enough to allow sec to open.

Good Luck
Larry

you might want to check your secondary cam, i had the same problem on a 86' chevy p/u. it's a little plastic piece, you can pick one up for about $5.00, it sucks to not beable to open them up when you need them!

How do you know they aren't opening? You should not feel anything when the sec. open if they are adjusted right. It will just continue to accelerate faster. Some times if you have a ram air type air cleaner you will hear more noise but that is about the only thing that should be different.
