What is the difference between a truck 396 and a car 396. I have a chance to buy a JQ code 369 which came out of a 1969 truck. This engine comes with everything but starter. Will need to be rebuilt, what is it worth? Thank you.

If it is out of a light truck(I believe 1 ton and below) then I would not think anything except that the cam would be set up for torque and would top out a less than 4000 rpm. The heads may not flow as a good set of passenger heads either or they may be the same.

In the bigger trucks Chevy put in tall deck big blocks (displacement is 427 I think) and they also put in 366 cubic inch big blocks. You should probably stay away from those as they are a pain to get hi po parts for like headers and cause lots of fitment problems etc since the block is actually a little bit taller.

Oops you want price, if it is a running big block but needs rebuilding then I would expect to pay well less than a $1000 maybe close to 500-600. If it is non running then somewhere around $500. 396's are getting a little scarce but...Why pay a lot just to get a 396 unless you are chasing numbers. If you want a cheap big block go find your self a 3/4 tn suburban from the 70-80's. They tend to have 454's and you can pick the whole vehicle running for 1500 or so if you look around. Then you can part the truck out and get most of your money back since folks like the parts particularly the 14 bolt rear ends.

I agree. That engine had only 265 horsepower, so if you`re looking for power you already have an uphill climb. However, if you just want the block don`t give more than $500 or thereabouts.-----Scott

Wow I must have gotten a deal. I just bought a 402bbc that dropped a valve and paid 150.00.
All I needed was the block but I had to buy everything.

Isn't a "JQ" motor a 10.25 to 1 CR, 310hp/396, four barrel, light truck motor like for a P/U??

$150 for a 402 is a screaming good deal. I paid $350 for a block and heads that need a complete rebuild a couple of years ago. They had been sitting a while. Guess you just need to know where to look.

Well my original 408bbc broke due to a bad lifter going through the block and cracking it out. I just happen to be walking through one of the plants and a guy came up and asked me if I wanted his 402. I said how much and he first said 250.00 and I told him my situation and he dropped the price down to 150.00. Nice guy huh???

Seller would not part with it for less than $800.00 so I pasted on the engine. Looking at a 427 tall deck engine. Will this engine fit under a flat hood? As I like Camaro's with the flat hood. Seems like everybody puts on a cowl hood which as a late 1969 only. Tired of seeing all the cowl hoods on every Camaro. Just like all the rally wheels. Most Camaro's came with hubcaps. Just ranting.

Not that it matters anymore pdq67, but a "YQ" code would have given you the L66 310 horse motor you were thinking about. That would have been in a truck from the factory. The specs on the other motor were correct however.-----Scott

It is going to be very close to get everything under there with a flat hood and a tall deck big block. You may get away with it by using a dual plan intake like a performer intake and a low profile air cleaner. But I still think it's going to be close.
I know with my engine and using an x-celerator intake, holley and moroso air cleaner with a 3" filter, I have very little room using a cowl hood.

That will be VERY, VERY tight. In IMHO you don't have a chance with anything except the lowest of the low intakes, like the Torquer 2.

FWIW, my '75, P/U 454 core motor that I made my 496 out of's stock cast-iron Q-Jet intake is darn low!!

I want to say 3.5" or so??? It's carb. mount flange seems almost, but not quite, flat with the runners. I had never looked it over all that close before but did when somebody asked about how tall it was in comarison to the old E-brock, 4-barrel SP-2P I have.

Sorry, but I can't remenmber where I put both their dimensions...

The tall-deck block is 1/4" taller at the front and rear wall than the standard block. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
