Hello everyone, This is my second request. I posted this under Heating and Cooling. Only one not to sure response. Sorry for the second post but this thing is really holding me up.
Trying to finish up my 502 and I'm stuck on the ByPass hose from the intake manifold to the water pump. The intake is a Edelbrock Air gap and the water pump is an Edelbrock. I can't find a Bypass hose to fit. What is the hose used for ? Is it needed? The car does not have a heater so I won't be using heater hoses. Can I just block off the Bypass or will the engine overheat?
Thanks, Joe

I had the same problem. I went to an auto parts store and searched until I found a hose with what looked like the correct bends. They weren't right but with some cutting and twisting I got it on half a$$ed. I tried to find out what the hose was for, but the store couldn't tell me from the stock number. Go figure. I can't believe that Edelbrock doesn't have a hose made to go from their intake to their waterpump. Someone must make one. I think you can block it off with no problem, I've seen it done, but I like having one on there.

I believe that the buy-pass hose is needed because it reduces cavitation which can reduce the efficiency of the water pump. They don't pump air very well. I have a long punp on my big block so I used large heater hose. If that is not good, ask the parts store rep to show you his pre-formed hoses in the back. Some of the ricer hoses may just fit the bill if you know what you are looking for.

I haven't used it on the last three big blocks I've built.........no issues. I do use a good thermostat with a couple of bypass holes drilled in it. A couple of buddies have removed theirs also without issue.

It helps remove air, and prevents the pump from dead heading against a closed thermostat. It also helps stabilize engine temperatures. Without a bypass hose, engine temps will oscillate during the first few minutes of operation as the termostat begins to open. No big deal really. I like Camcojb's suggestion of drilling bypass holes in the stat. Anything to keep a little water circulating.

Thanks, everyone. I went to my local NAPA store and found a hose. With a little triming it fit well. smile.gif
