I have a 1998 jeep wrangler sport with a inline 6 motor. I know this isn't a camaro but i figured someone here could help me because i have no luck with anyone else on the jeep forums. Now my problem is this rear main seal keeps going out and scoreing my crank i have had a total of 4 seals go out and one crank get scored. I do go in the mud some but i have talked to others who have the same jeep as mine and put there jeeps through mud that is well over the bumpers and they have no problems. Heck i don't go through mud that is like a half a foot deep. Hell i could go down a dusty road and it would probally break the seal. Now please can someone tell me some things i can check out on my motor that i can help so the seal won't keep going out? please can anyone help me on this. Thanks
Chris

What's the dealer say? It should still be in warranty? If not, how is it failing? Is it squeezing out? or drying up?

just my 2cents,
but it COULD possibly be a bad thrust bearing in the engine , thus when you place the engine under load (like in the mud) it causes the crank to come forward, thus leaving a gap in the rear seal and it comes out.,
I only say this because I had a old L6 in one of my 67 mustangs , and too many neutral drops wasted the thrust bearing and I had the same problem, it may well not be the cause of your problem, but I figured i'd tell the story just in case.

chris you came up with what i was gona say, too much endplay on the crank.
get your end play checked out, and if it has too much find out why! you might have a nice warenety claim here.
