Just picked up a muncie 4 speed for my 69 project car. I'm not worried about #,s on this one, but want it to look close to original. Anyway, this muncie 4 speed was pulled out of a 71 firebird. IT has 32 fine spline output shaft and it has a 661 main case. I'm trying to find out if it's a wide or close ratio trans. the only stampings it has on the case are "39068" and "CC3". The #'s don't match the vin # of the car. anybody have any idea what these # mean? I suspect that this could be a replacement trans and that's why it dosn't have the usual date code and partial vin. Also I'll have to use the big yolk for this on the drive shaft. can I use a stock 400 auto drive shaft or am I going to have to get one made with the big yolk. Anyone know what the length is of a 4 speed driveshaft?

Kurt, the easiest way to ID a Muncie is to count the rings on the input shaft, 2 rings is an M20, 1 ring is an M21, no rings is an M22 unless the input has been changed, which case you will have to remove the side cover and inspec/count the number of teeth on the input to know for sure. See this link for more info.

A 32 spline Muncie is about 1" longer than the 27 spline Muncie. Yes, you will need the big TH400 yoke, and the drive shaft will probably need to be shortened but I would check it, yoke should be able to move about 3/4" into the tranny with the correct length driveshaft.

Hope this helps,
Joe

I went with the M22 and just changed the yoke on the driveshaft and it bolted right up. I had the 27 spline yoke with a 3 speed prior. No mods done to the driveshaft.

Kurt, What you have is an over-the-counter main case, meaning that case was purchased in a box and used to replace a broken or damaged one. The CC3 means the case was put in parts system in 1973. 39068 is the part #. If it had a P# and CT3 it would be from an over-the-counter trans complete. the CC code started in the middle of 1968 because I have 660 cases with & without the CC8 code. I have several N.O.S. cases still in the GM box and an N.O.S. M-21 in its GM box. Hope this helps--Crash
