for everbody who has installed a american thunder exhaust system have you had any trouble with the emergency brake cable? On mine right where I mount the H-pipe the emergency brake cable is touching the exhaust system. That'll burn right through the cable won't it? what do I do with it?

Thanks, Dan

I should've added that my car is a 69 camaro so it might have been different.
Thanks, Dan

Dan,

How does the American Thunder system fit? I was thinking about putting one on my 69 convertible.

oh the american thunder system mounts up perfect it only took like a hour. it's simple if you ask me, and it was only like $300 compared to $700 for the original which is quieter which I hate in a muscle car. Other then the emergency cable touching the H-pipe I love it and love how it looks on there. I haven't heard it yet do to the lack of a radiator but I'm sure it will sound perfect. CAN'T WAIT!

The brake cable rubs on mine and I was also concerned about cable breakage. My system went on about a year ago (about 1,000 miles ago) and there is no visible wear or discoloration to the cable. The only wear I see is a slight 'trench' in the pipes where the cable touchs.

Is the American thunder system the one with 2 mufflers and the polished exhaust tips? Any problems installing the H pipe to a set of headers? Do the mufflers tuck up under the car good enough so they don't look like they are hanging low? How much welding was required? Sorry for all the questions, but I am close to buying a system for my car. Happy new year.

The American Thunder system fits great, other then the emergency brake cable touching the H-pipe which I'm still questioning and wondering what to do???? Yes it's the one with the two mufflers and the polished tips which look excellent coming out the back. With headers they give you a pipe that you can cut to fit to the headers. I have hedman headers and I just cut them with the sawzall and put them on it fit perfect. There is two indents just forward of the rear end where the floor levels out where the mufflers tuck up in and it's pretty well tucked in there considering other cars that have mufflers practically dragging on the ground. There is no welding required if you don't want to, but they recomend it and so don't I. You get clamps with the kit to put on there when you install it and you can keep them on if you want to, but I'm going to take mine off and weld it for a clamp free look that won't come apart. Although I haven't heard it yet I'd recomend this exhaust system because of the easy installation, wayyyyy better then most I have installed.

The ebrake cable on mine touches also, but doesn't seem to be a problem. The only problem I've had is the rear end hitting the tail pipes on a big dip or bump. I probably could have adjusted them better had I paid attention. Just a heads up for the guys that are planning an install.

My e-brake cable rubs as well. Haven't had any problems yet, though and it's been almost 2 years. The sound is pretty mean and I don't find the interior resonance that bad. I know it does bother some people, though.

Installation was simple. It's REALLY simple if you have a welder.

I found the fitment to be a little tight coming out between the leaf and the 1/4 panel.

Ditto what Chad said. The system looks better welded too IMO. The Dynomax Ultraflow mufflers will fit in easy if you like their sound better thean the Deltaflows.

My e-brake cable touches too and isn't a problem. The pipes don't get nearly hot enough to hurt the cable.

You can adjust some of the slack out of the cable too - that might help a little.

Two questions:

1. Anyone install on a 69 convertible?

2. Can anyone post some pix?

Click on this link, then select the one for the 69 camaro and you can watch an installation video for the american thunder system.

It should answer many of your questions.

My e-brake cable rubs as well and I have not noticed any problems with it. I would have to guess that the car has enough air movement underneath it so that the cable doesn't get hot enough to burn through. In the event that it would burn through the cable it would not be tough to replace it. I love the system and would recommend it to anyone.

I also am interested in installing on a 69 convertible. I almost ordered the system but stopped when I read that the system doesn't fit convertibles on flowmaster's web site.

Thanks a lot guys. I'll leave the cable there and see what happens. About the american thunder systems for a convertible does it fit a convertible vs. a coupe? I have a buddy who has a convertible that would like to put a flowmaster exhaust system depending on how mine sounds compared to the dynomax mufflers.

i have the crossflow Flowmaster kit, and it's been on the car since i got it back in the spring of 99. the e-brake cable sits right on top of it, and there has been no problems with it. i drive my car a lot, and the exhaust gets pretty warm, but the e-brake works perfect. took me about 2 hours to install the system laying on my back in my old apartment parking lot with only the rear of the car up on jackstands. i later added the Hedman X-pipe kit, and love it.

I think the X-bracing under the convertible might cause a clearance problem with the American Thunder pipes. I'd call Flowmaster and see what they recommend, but the Xbrace is the only real diff underneath that I am aware of.

I don’t mean to resurrect an old subject, but I have a comment for those who have a rubbing emergency brake cable that rattles against the pipes. I have a large cam and the pipes vibrate a lot. The emergency brake cable junction rattles against the pipes. E-brake adjustment was about right, so I did not want to tighten it any more. I got an 8” piece of “silicone” heater hose from a local ambulance sales dealer and put it on the e-brake cable. It won’t melt and fixes the rattle. This is also the same hose you might use for a header based crankcase evacuation system.
