Do you guys have any ideas what would might cause my car to just die after being driven for a while? If I drive non-stop for say 20 minutes the first stop light/sign I come to the car won't hold an idle and just dies out. It always starts right back up. I can't figure it out. If it helps I have a 600cfm Edelbrock, Holley fuel pump(mech.). I apreciate the advise.

I bought an old '63, Merc. Meteor once that had a bad coil on it that would quit when it got a little warm.. Cool off and run fine until it cycled again!

I put a new $4.00 stock coil on it and it never happened again...

Just food for thought..

Good luck with your trouble shooting...pdq67

See if it will idle if you cover the choke/airhorn with your hand slightly. possible lean condition.

P.S . I have an HEI type distributor. Thanks for the suggestion though pdq. All others are welcome.~~~~Mahalo

i had that same problem with my camaro too.

after 10 minutes it just stopped, i pulled the fuel line blew in it until gas came out (because i made pressure in the gastank) and i could drive further for about 10 minutes.

it appeared to be a bad filter inside the gastank, i took it out and it was solved :D

You have an HEI distributor, Thats it, look for one of the small wires(green and white) going to pick up coil inside the distributor. After many years of use Vacumm advance on and off these wires suffer the coat hanger syndrome, where they are bent back and forth, that they finally break, tug very gently on the wires as they go into the pick up coil, if they give at all then the inner wires will be broken, you will have to remove the distributor to replace the Pick up coil, Good luck.

I had to install a ballast resistor because the resistor wire on my 67 is bad. I have never had the problem again. I tried a new coil but it did not work. Put on the ballast and old coil, the only time it has ever quit in 30,000 miles is when I ran out of gas.

It has to be fuel or spark right? The HEI is nearly new so i'm leaning towards the fuel,or lack of it that is. Could be a filter? Would a lean idle circuit act like that? Much mahalo for the advice.

Unscrew the gas cap after it dies and see if you hear that giant sucking sound ross perot is always talking about. :D

oops did not see that you have an HEI. I have only heard of this problem. Might want to check the module in the dist. I have heard they can get hot and fail. It's my understanding when they fail they fail and that's it but I have had a guy swear he had one fail intermitantly on him and do this very thing. They are cheap, might want to make sure it has heat sink applied under it, it could be getting a heat soak problem........what the hell a shot in the dark.

I did have an HEI that had a chafed wire under the advance and when the vacume advance started to pull the mech advance it would ground out and shut down the ignition (this was a hard one to find). It would get to about 2500 RPM die, the advance would kick back to where it was not grounding it and the engine would come back to life. Drove me nut for about an hour or two, but i figured from the start it to be electrical. Sorry about being long winded but sometimes it really stupid stuff that drives us crazy.
