V = Flint Engine Factory
05 = May
20 = 20th day of March
ME = 1967 or 1968 Camaro 327cu 210hp, 2bbl, Powerglide
Your engine seems to have been built May 20, 1967. It was installed in the 6878th '68 Camaro at the Norwood Assembly plant.
Sorry, you don't have a numbers matching car.

YenkoYS100 Feb 3rd, 00, 07:41 PM Is it possible that he made a mistake reading the serial # off of the engine? I don't think Chevy built 4 million Camaros in '68?

Moris Feb 4th, 00, 12:18 AM Post the cowl tag to see the built date of the car, for what I read in your VIN, your car a 1968 Camaro conv. V8 built at Noorwood was the 140689th car built during the 68 production year (in 68 it started in 300000).
About the engine reconfirm the numbers, it seems you may have posted an extra number (the 7), if so the engine would match the VIN. Check your numbers and post them again.

Dion Feb 4th, 00, 06:48 PM Just in case you were wondering,the begining of your VIN decodes as follows:124678N 440688 1=Manufacturer,Chevrolet 2=Model,Camaro 4=Engine type,V-8 67=2dr.convertible 8=Model year 1968 N=Assembly plant, Norwood,Ohio 440688=Sequetial unit number The sequential unit #s for 1968 starts with 300001 1969 starts with 500001.The May 1968 Producton numbers from the Norwood plant start with 426001 and end with 448000.Your #s fall in that time frame.As for the motor I would recheck the #s they are very close 440688 & 4406878? Any way the motor breaks down like this:V=Flint engine plant,05 =Assembly month,May,20=Day, Me=327/210hp powerglide transmission.I hope this helps,but I would definitely check the last 6 VIN & motor #s again
rustorator Feb 6th, 00, 02:44 PM I rechecked the #s on the engine pad and now I understand the confusion after seeing how the #S are supposed to match. the engine pad does read 18N4406878 however the 7&8 on the end are partially overlapped like someone made a mistake then corrected it.So, I don't know if the factory goofed or someone was messing around. Anyway, the cowl #'s from the firewall? read....68-12467nor140658.Under that there is a 724 and then R2. I hope that helps...thanks!!
Bob Cam Feb 7th, 00, 07:02 AM Hey Dion, In your VIN breakdown, mine starts 124379. My question is what does the 37 denote. Thanks in advance.
Dave Birdwell Feb 7th, 00, 04:47 PM Bob- The 37 in the VIN indicates 2 door coupe. A convertible would be 67. These are the only two body styles available for the Camaro.
Dion Feb 8th, 00, 05:14 PM Rustorator,your trim tag should have three numbers above the 68, that would be your build date.The rest of your tag decodes as follows:68=model year.12467=eight-cylinder Convertible.Nor= Norwood, Ohio.140658=Sequential body number.724=Red standard bucket seats.R=Matador red (exterior body color).2=Black convertible top.Now you know.
