Had a nocking noise in my fresh 454 so I pulled thinking it was a rod. Found that the crank had .020 end play thats not right is it.

I believe .007"-.009".
I can double check this against reference
materials if you need.

Something is very wrong. You may need to get the thrust on the crank welded and remachined. The thrust is not normally a problem on a BB even if it is raced with a manual trans.

Will a new crank and barrings fix the problem. Beacause I already have both
of these new.

Brandon,
The new crank and bearings will solve the problem, but if your motor was balanced, you will have to balance the new crank to match. I would just have your present crankshaft reground. I am pretty sure Clevite makes a bearing with a wider thrust dimension just for this purpose, if not, I think King does.
You also need to find out why the thrust failed on yours. Here is a link to get started: http://www.aera.org/Tech/tb1465r.htm
Hope this helps,

Brandont,
also be sure to check your torque converter installation carefully when the motor goes back in.
A common cause of thrust failures is either
a converter that is not fully seated or
that is ballooning due to heat or extreme
use beyond it's mechanical capability.

I believe the most recommended play is about .012. If you've got .020 you can purchase a rear main bearing with a .010 oversize on the thrust and it will put you back in allowable range. I had to do this on my last 427 when the patch artist machine shop that turned my crank hit my thrust and shaved it past allowable range. Really makes me mad especially since I had it done a couple of years before I was able to assemble my engine. By then it was too late to do anything about it.

After further review I found that the number 8 rod berring had spun. Could this be the problem. By the way this was a fresh motor
with 300 miles on it built by local engine
shop.
