My 67' Camaro has a '69 M21 (I believe) which makes a noise in gears 1,2,& 3, but is quiet once I get it in 4th.

The seller told me the gear bearing is bad as he had a shop look at it. While it doesn't seem to be an immediate problem, I plan on dropping the tranny at some point for a rebuild.

I'm considering doing the rebuild myself. I have never rebuilt a transmission and was wondering if there is a good reference for doing this? Anyone think I should be talked out of rebuilding it myself? Other comments?

I just had my Muncie rebuilt a few weeks ago. The sounds you are hearing may also by the synchros. I had it done professionally and had it completely rebuilt. It cost me $1K but was well worth it because it came with a warranty and saved my time! Doing it yourself would definately save you $. Good luck!

I meant to say it was the cage bearing.

Anyone personally rebuild a muncie themselves? Is it worth the effort?

I rebiult mine a couple years ago. They are not all that difficult, although the countershaft can be a PITA to get back in. I don't know of any good reference materials, I used a magazine article (don't remember which one). I went through and replaced the bearings and seals as there was nothing seriously wrong with my tranny, just worn.
You might try a search on "muncie rebuild" also, this has been discussed before.
Good Luck

You also might want to invest in the "Camaro Resotarion Handbook." I saw several illustrations on transmission rebuilds. The book sells for aroung $23.

Are you sure that you don't have an M22? The "rockcrusher" will make a gear noise in the first three gears.

My copy of the "Camaro Restoration Handbook" has only one paragraph on manual trannies; but it's about a 10 year old copy (cover price: 14.95) - do newer revisions have the tranny rebuild info? Would buy a new copy if they did; have an M-20 that I was given disassembled and would like to use it.

Here are links to two sites that can help:
http://www.interlog.com/~muncie/
www.gearzone.net (http://www.gearzone.net)

You should also get a Chevy overhaul manual and the Camaro Owner's Handbook has seven pages with pictures of a M20 rebuild. Its not to hard to rebuild a Muncie.

My copy of the "Handbook" is about 3 years old, still only the one paragraph. (good book though)

Thanks for all the responses. I'm pretty sure its a muncie 21. I haven't had a chance to get the assembly code but the part numbers seem to be indicative of a '69 muncie 21. Here's the number's for reference.

DRIVERS SIDE TRANSMISSION 3950306

PASSENGERS SIDE TRANSMISSION 3925660 3857584

I'm sure after the job I will be saying its pretty easy to rebuild but right now its a little intimidating so I will research before I attempt.
