Do I need a cam thrust washer for this or just put the cam gear on and degree it properly? End play is fine.

With a flat tappet cam, the slight angle cut into the lobes to rotate the lifters will keep the cam back where it belongs. Roller cams need a thrust washer or button

I put a button my BBC with a new Comp Cams XE294H cam and from what I've been told by the tech's at Comp Cams, this is why a lifter broke and went through the side of the block.
They also made the same comment Jim made, so I've told myself that the button is in the trash.....

A thrust button and thrust washer are different things. You don't want a thrust button with a non roller cam. But you can put a thrust bearing behind the cam gear on a non roller cam, but you also have to have the cam gear with the recess machined in. This will save wear on the front surface of the cam journal.
