Is this normal for it to leak (very small) after installin a new motor? If so, will it decipate after the internal parts set?

View Full Version : REAR MAIN SEAL LEAK ssdanny69 Oct 4th, 00, 09:15 AM Is this normal for it to leak (very small) after installin a new motor? If so, will it decipate after the internal parts set? mccorry Oct 4th, 00, 01:33 PM I wouldn't think that the rear main seal should leak at all. Are you sure it is the seal and not the back manifold valley gasket? Mark W. Winning Oct 5th, 00, 03:51 AM Only time I had one leak so soon after a rebuild was when I put the seal in with the lip facing the wrong direction. ------------------ Mark 1992 Firebird 355/Six Speed 1991 RS 350 / 700-R4 1987 Toyota Pickup 383 / 500 + HP 10.963 @ 119.95 Slicks / 11.997 @ 114.23 Radials http://personal.lig.bellsouth.net/~racer383/ ssdanny69 Oct 5th, 00, 05:27 AM I'm fairly certain that it's the rear main seal. I just had the tranny pulled and rebuilt (4spd Muncie) could this have caused it to leak? Thanks for your input! mbrekke Oct 5th, 00, 12:47 PM Did you check where the oil pan bolts up to the block in the rear? Mark CarlC Oct 5th, 00, 01:00 PM What about the oil pressure switch or pressure line? ------------------ Click here to see see my car and hear 5-speeds. http://www.geocities.com/casanoc mccorry Oct 5th, 00, 02:06 PM hmmmm.....Fresh tranny (std.) and an apparent rear main seal leak. Could it be the front seal on the transmission? Steve pdq67 Oct 5th, 00, 02:53 PM 400's are known to weep due to the seal backup area being slightly oversize I think after the crank is turned (or something like that). I know my 406 has always weeped slightly and I sealed the rear main seal backup as well as rotated the ends of the seal about a 1/4" plus dabbed on a smidgin of RTV on each end and even put a little on the main cap/block itself. Good luck. pdq676 |
