Just had a rear end question I currently have a 10 bolt 8.5 rear end in a 67 camaro and have 4.88 gears , I want ot go to a more streetable gear like 3.73 Can I just order 3.73 say richmond gears and they will fit my application or is there more I need to know, since I am just changing gears, I saw where some guys say they have gears for a 10 bolt and will fit the newer camaros I take it those are not the 8.5 rear ends , any info will help ,

The 8.5 gears will work for all years. You can get new 3.73 gears for it or get used gears from a late model 1/2 ton truck 8.5. You do know that the gears will have to be set up and shimmed for the proper pinion depth, bearing preload, backlash and contact pattern don you?

I didn't want to start a whole new topic so I thought I'd ask in this thread. It pertains to setting up a rearend with new gears like you both are talking about.

The '73 8.5" I just picked up has 3 different colors sort of painted on different areas of the ring gear and the bearing caps. There's some green on the ring gear, orange on one or both of the caps and I think there's blue in there somewhere also. Was this a common thing back in those days or can I assume some work was done in there since then?

Thanks!!

As far as the gears go Yes I know about the shims and preload and setting up the rear end and thanks for the helpful information, It always pays to ask a few questions if your not for sure about a few things,

Joe,
The paint marks are production line marks to show that certain operations have been completed. The marks on the bearing caps are helpfull for getting the caps back in the right place when re-assembling the rear end.

Great... thanks again Freddie. I should have assumed that because of the sloppy, excessive amount they used.
