Ok gang I hang out on svtperformance.com alot when I am not combing the threads here (i have an 01 cobra). I like svt alot because they have a picture and video forum that is full of all kinds of racing action (99% mustang) but still cool. The major beef I have is that people who own a 03 supercharged cobra talk alot of smack and think of some off the wall stories. I was just reading the other day how someone raced a 440 demon with a blower and how he was an easy kill. I mean come on, a blown 440 vs a cobra from a dig? I know these are fast cars a pulley and a cat back can put them up to 450+ HP. I just dont understand why they make up so many stories? All i hear is raced a viper, z06, M3, lightning, lancer evo, turbo this, big block that... I still think it is funny that a 500+ cobra still runs in the low 12s. I understand these people are happy about owning one of the only v8 domestic cars out now, but a few simple mods on any first gen and some slicks will shut down most anything. Wanna start a BS forum too? :D

Got to agree with you.

Cobra's are nice rides, but are not the godsends that some owners make them out to be.

This same thing happened when the Mustang GT's came out along with all the other 5.0 Mustangs. The owners thought they had rocket ships. I think it has a lot to do with what you said about being a V8 rear wheel drive car. It just seems WAY fast after riding around in moms Honda Accord. If that is the most power that they have felt then of course they think it's the fastest thing going. There will always be a faster car out there no matter how fast you "think" you are.

Maybe he did beat the Blown 440 but, ask him if the driver of the Mopar knew they were racing. Kids in Ricers are probably running around telling people they beat my car too but, I don't even race them. I think they race themselves, it is entertaining.

I think they race themselves LOL Royce!! I'm sure that's where most of their "kill" stories come from!!

Ah, heck....

I guess we need ta let some Pony drivers race Ed's Porky '68 Chevelle then to set them straight!!

He, He!!

And to make it interesting only on the motor!!!! NO gas allowed, period!!

We will even allow a 460 conversion or two so they can't bitch about, "Oh, I got beat by a BB and I'm only a 5.0, (or whatever they are now)" sorta crap.....!!!!

yep all we have now is a dohc 4.6 281ci v8 but for 3000 or more we can bore it out to a 302, and make about 350hp NA. graemlins/clonk.gif for a daily dirver i cant beat my stang, but my 69 is almost finished! if i had the coin I would so go for a new caddy cts-v

aw come on, dont be haters. there are as many dorkweeds driving Ls1's talking about how they beat this that or the other thing and some mustang guy somewhere is saying what a bunch of smack bs it is.!
bottom line, the cobras are fast for production cars, period. and so WERE the ls1's, but chevy dont make 'em anymore. just like the 5.0 mustangs, they don't make a similar american car that can hang with it, thats why 5 liters were/are so popular, anyone who doesn't recognize the fact the 5 liter brought back american muscle from a pathetic state, even the vette was a roach, i'm thinking is ignoring it.
so basically thats my .02, i'm just defending mustang for what it is, a worthy car. and i even have some good racing stories about spanking the cobras with my camaro :D

No, not ragging on them at all, but rather wish some of them realized just how much power and how quick old-fashioned BB muscle in a big car can be!!

AND I'm glad the little 5.0 help keep the fire burning when things were darkest..

The only problem I have with Mustang owners is that they think they are too good to hang out with their neighbors 1 town up, even though they just painted their 1st gen Camaro and it came out SWEET! tongue.gif seriously though, Mustangs are at least American...I owned an older Mustang II that was pretty quick, and I have 2 friends with newer Cobra's. The guy who beat the blown BB Demon must not have been racing on I-5 here in Washington...'cause there ain't any room ;)

they all roll race. all of the stories go like this: "... on the third honk at a 60mph roll i dropped it in second (lost major traction) and the "insert super car" missed a gear, but he still managed to stay at my door, then when I slammed it in to 3rd I quickly put bus lengths on him, we shut it down at 120 though, just to be safe." graemlins/sad.gif I like hole shots at the tarck alot better.

The super charger whine sounds awesome though. I guess its not the power of your car its house its used. The IRS on the cobra is the weak link for drag racing. I think a healthy 355-383 with aluminum heads and a few other power mods could easily shut down a supercharged late model. Call me crazy but we know how to hook from a dead stop graemlins/thumbsup.gif lets hear it for Cal Tracs! graemlins/hurray.gif

why does the 5.0 Mustang get ALL the credit for bringing back "American Muscle"? does everyone always forget about the turbo Buicks starting with the efi 84 GN/T-type and continuing up to the 87 GNX? they better fit the "muscle car" image than the "pony" car Mustang does- midsize cars with big power. or does the fact that they only had (gasp) 6 cylinders and a (bigger gasp) turbo kill off the "muscle" image?
of course, the fact that i am getting an 84 T-type in about 6 hours might affect my viewpoint on this..

Not at all Nova, but I draw the line at the old-fashioned 6-inliners and V-8's, be them flat-heads, wedge-heads or hemi-heads, that's all.

Sure a Buick GN runs great but take away the hair drier and what do you have??

Anyway, glad you are getting what you want.. Please come back later and fill us in on how it goes down the road/strip..

Yes, I totaly agree with you First 69. graemlins/hurray.gif So many people out here in Southern California, think these Cobras are the best. But honestely there is nothin like the look, sound, ride and hp that first gen. and second gen cars make not matter what. I would never trade my 68 for any late model cobra not matter what was under the hood of it. You know how that goes, " I would rather push a Chevy than drive a", you know!!!!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

BTW guys,

I know I'm a little late getting in on this thread, but what was the last year model for the 5.0 motor before they switched to the 4.6DOHC? Also, what was the stock HP rating of the last 5.0 motor? Just Curious....

I'm not a Mustang hater or anything because I used to own a 79 Mustang with the 302 in it. It was a fun little car... Wow, I must be showing my age because my old car had a "302" in it instead of the politically correct 5.0 name. he! he! :D

Anywho, It's like someone said a few posts back. The truth is there will always be some car that's faster than yours. And there will always be drivers that love to talk smack non-stop about how they drive the "baddest" car on the street....you know the type....People like that are sooooo annoying!

Im not sure about the HP on the old 5.0 motors but the last year a cobra had a 5.0 was in 95. Then they switched to the 4.6 SOHC in the GTs. The Cobra got the DOHC and was rated at 305hp from 96-98 then in 99 they got a redesigned intake and heads, knocking it up to 320hp. No cobras for 2000 then they built more in 2001 with upgraded interior (like mine). Today we have the fabled 03-04 cobras that are supercharged, I think they are rated at 390, but dyno for much more. I could be wrong, Im a chevy guy graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Well, I'll tell ya what. Owning and driving an 800+HP blown Chevelle, I know there is no way I can hook on the street. I am also lucky enough to have an 04 SVT Cobra, and I'll tell ya what, I bet it will beat my Chevelle on the street, it hooks better, easier. On the track, with slicks, it's a different story and the Chevelle will take the Cobra, but on the street, all bets are off.

I don't streetrace, but I get a pretty good feeling from the way things hook (or don't hook) what the potential is.

One of these days, I'll get both cars on the track at the same time, same day, and see how they do smile.gif

My 20 year old cousin got an 03 Convert last year and with his pulley and exhaust the car somehow became up there with a Lambourghini. Man, talk about a swelled head, still can't break into the low 12's with slicks. No wonder they call stang guys ricers. Same twisted sense of reality.

I got the same hogwash from my nephew when we were just booting around on the highway. I backed off my ACR Viper when it got too dangerous. He kept going. Now he's bragging his SVT Stang beat me. Now he's looking for a new clutch and whatnot, at least he's still in one piece.
