View Full Version : BB Electric fans?

I want to remove the mechanical fan/shroud setup on my 68. It as a 454 with a long water pump and power steering. I have looked at several twin electric fan setups and cannot find one that will fit. I found one at Summit that fits but I am concerned that it does not cover enough vertically and also if it moves enough air. It also comes VERY close to the water pump so I had to mount it at the very top of the radiator.
Does anyone know of a setup that will fit this setup? I am about ready to put the mechanical setup back on and just forget about it.

I have experimented with electric cooling fans on my 69 Impala, 454. Bottom line, I was much better off with the correct factory clutch fan and factory shroud. The electric fans really were a disappointment in my case. Due to space limitations, I had mine installed in front of the radiator (pusher mode). Are you having cooling problems?

I was until I added an electric pusher in front of the mechanical. I was hoping to just use the 2 pullers.

I use a set of 4th gen fans. They come mounted in a shroud. You will have to cut the shroud a little to get it to fit right around the radiator. You will also have to rig up a way to mount it to the radiator. I welded 4 little pieces of aluminum angle onto the tanks and ran a bolt through the shroud. It also clears my long water pump. I picked mine up used for $60 - make sure you get connectors and a foot of harness wire so you can connect up. These fans work great, they blow a lot of air. I do not use any additional pusher fans. With those fans and a griffin radiator, my engine (406ci) has never gotten hotter than 180*.

i'm running a v-8 caddilac fan, with a thermostatic on/off switch, mounted to the stock shroud (puller) on my 68 w/ a 406, and it runs 180-185 all the time, regardless of weather. my buddies wife has a 454 in her '69rs, with just a factory fan + shroud off something like a V-6 citation, and it runs 190 all the time as well. don't overlook the factory fans, they are pretty effective. and i prefer using a shroud of some type, factory one works great for me, in a puller configuration. just my .02

Torker,
How wide is your Griffin? I have the stock 4 core and when I tried to use a 98 Trans Am fan setup there was no way it was going to fit. It hit the water pump, the power steering and the auto trans lines. I guess I should ask if you have an auto trans as well.
Thanks for all of the responses guys. This was getting frustrating. Buying parts that don't fit is not really what I had in mind.

rs1968ss,

The over all width of griffin (outside end of tank to outside end of tank) is about 29inches, and its 3" deep. My shroud is 26" and it overlaps onto each tank. I had to trim and notch the shroud in several places so it would lie down flush against the cooling fins. I also have it mounted so the fans straddle the water pump. Its out of a 95 camaro. I'm not sure, but chevy may have changed the fans when they went to the LS1? I don't have a tranny cooler, depending where your lines go you may or may not be able to trim the shroud enough.

You might want to look at 3rd gen fans. I don't think they came with as big a shroud. You may even be able to mount them without using a shroud? Those also go for around $60 used.

Randy,

I have a 69 Camaro big block with long pump and ps. I tried the Trans Am fans as above as I had used them on a 72 Camaro and they worked great. They did not fit at all on my 69; no clearance.

I used the twin 11" Spals and they worked great. I'm not sure they'd fit the stock 23" wide radiator though; mine is 24.5" and it basically covers almost the full core. If you were willing to trim around the lower radiator hose, it should be able to be used.

I am currently using a Lincoln Mark VIII single 22" fan. It pulls even more air than the twin Spals but is much harder to fit; required a bunch of trimming and wouldn't work if your radiator is stock width.

One thing I have found, the good electrics out-perform the stock clutch fans at idle, which is where I seem to have cooling issues if there are any.

Here's a pic of the Spals.

Randy,

I'm also using the twin Spal unit. They cured my cooling problem. My car never goes over the thermostat rating, even on really hot days. Before I had a 16" puller, and 12" pusher, and they weren't getting the job done, the temp would keep rising, http://www.camaros.net/forum/frown.gif . The spal fans move alot of air, and with the shroud, move air through alot of the radiator. They do pull alot of amps though, so use relay's and I hope you have a good alternator. But I think they should work for you, http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif .

Not that I want to admit this, but the best fan on the market currently is from Ford. It is used on the 95-97 Lincon Mark VIII. It pulls over 5000 CFM from a single fan and has a built in shroud. Ford part number for those who might want to go see it:

F3LY8C60AA

I have used this fan on about 15 different cars now and it the winner hands down. I cant find my dimentions sheets right now, but if your interested, let me know and I'll give you the full run down.

I have put these on the Griffen 'bolt in' units, custom's and some others. But as for the Griffen specifically itself, I have found that this fan fits better than anything else avaiable. Dont get me wrong, I still use Spal fans all the time. But for a non race or a car that doesnt require a racecar cooling system and driving at 100+ MPH all the time, this just plain works. My friends and customers that live in Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico swear on on them.

Oh yeah, its a two speed fan also. You can run a thermostat on the primary and have the AirConditioning or a manual switch enguage the second speed, or you can just run it on the second speed alone.

I agree as my post covered the Mark VIII as what I currently use. The Spals were a much easier fit with a big block though.

I would like to know your secret for two speeds though. Mine only runs at one speed no matter whether you connect one of the power wires and the ground, or both at the same time. I think the Lincoln had something built into the wiring harness to cut the voltage to slow the fan down under normal operation, hence giving it two speeds. I wrote a few of the guys on the Chevelle board who use the same fan and they all said it's called a two speed but only has one with full voltage.

The stock radiator is just under 23" between the end pieces. The Mark VIII fan is 22"? Why would it not fit? Is the shroud a lot larger? Any pics of the setup?

Randy,

I think it'll be tough to fit. Reason is that the motor is about 5" tall. You can trim the housing almost an inch but that still leaves the motor running into the water pump pulley on a long pump set-up. The motor is slightly offset from the center, plus my radiator is 1.5" wider than yours (core width) which allowed me to put the fan all the way against the drivers side of the radiator. The motor barely clears, and I had to cut out some of the support webbing for the motor to clear the pulley.

I just am not sure you can fit it in there unless you slide the fan past the edge of the core so part of it is covering the side tank. My radiator is 24.5" wide at the core and needs every inch to get it in there. I bought it from Houston Performance for $160. Their number is (281) 893-6080

Here's a pic of the install.

Thanks for the pic. Very nice! I agree about the pump. With it being 5", there is not enough room. It looks like I may have to go back to the mech. setup since I really do not want to replace the radiator right now. I may look into using 2 single fans and try and place them where they would clear. Hard to get enough air flow that way however. With the mechanical fan and an electric pusher I could keep it under 210 so it is alright. I was just hoping for a "cleaner" setup.

The dual Spal 11" set-up I posted before should fit easily on your car, as it did on mine. On my car it cooled better at idle than the factory clutch fan set-up; probably 10-15 degrees better at idle. I've never had issues once the car is moving down the road.

Let me get back to you on the wiring. I do know that it is actually an 18 volt fan and it does require a very LARGE fuse to handle the current (I think its a 60 amp, as that is what we have been using), but the excitation voltage is on the second tang and is turned on by either ACC or AirConditioning. With this much currrent, let me make sure its requirements before you quote me on any of this.

Most of the radiators I have used have a 23" core width, so it has been an easy fit everytime. With a Big Block I have had to mount the fan to the right side of the radiator as not to interfear with the H2O pump and pulley. My current set up for my 67 is this radiator and the Lincon Mark VIII fan:
http://64.226.148.152/main/product/detail2.asp?Page=2&GenID=39&BrandID=102&BlurbID=944&toolbar=4

This set up is what I use to icecube 800+ HP Big Blocks....and having a heat exchanger is self explainitory. The Griffen works too.

You can purchase the fan at Ford. I think it retails for about $220.00. If you have a friend in the business they are about $165.00.

I'm using a 75 amp relay on mine. No matter what combination of power I use to either of the two power terminals, you get one speed. I thought it was defective but a second one and several guys from the Chevelle board said theirs was one speed also.

Bottom line, if it will fit it is an excellent fan, best I've found. One final thought, if your engine is in the stock offset big block location then it probably will fit as stated by Chicane. My engine is centered with the Wayne Due front end which made it harder.

I just went into the garage, plugged it into 12.8 volts and it turned two different speeds corresponding to the two different excitation connections.

Hummm..... Maybe there is something in the part number itself?

Dimentions: 22x19x6 +1.5" for mounting ears face offset = 1.5"

Hi, I live in Norway and i just went to the scrap yard and picked up some really good electric fans for nothing for my Camaro 67. Actually from a french car
Citroen BX and CX has the same fans and they are really good, they almost lift if u start them on the floor, the Citroen has plastic hoods, which doesnt give of much heat so the
fans are crucial, I just drilled holes in them and tie wrapped them several places to the radiator, and added an electrical switch in throught the top water hose, i guess summit sell those,

Randy,

I'm running one of those 'fits all' aluminum radiators. It has twin 1" cores type. You can buy them in Summit for under $200. The reason I chose twin spal unit is it because of the room issue, as you know a bb with a long water pump doesn't leave much room between the pump and rad. That spal unit just barely fit. I think you'll be glad you if you bought it, and I believe it will definitally out perform two separate fans. The shroud these fans are contained in, helps alot. Get it, you'll like it, http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif .

Hello everyone,

Follow the link in my sig to pictures of the SPAL dual fan/BeCool combo in a BB '69 Camaro.

The radiator is a custom piece from BeCool, with a two inch wider core, so the brackets bolt to the stock BB location (instead of the standard BeCool '69 rad that bolts to the SB location).

It cools the ZZ502 just fine.

My only concern about the SPAL setup is that it fits pretty close with the Be Cool radiator and with the "fits all" one as well. These radiators are wider than the stock radiator so you can therefore place the fans closer to the battery to clear the nose of the water pump. With the stock radiator, I would not be able to locate it that far over and would then run into clearance problems?

I don't think that would be a problem Randy. If you go back to the pic of the Spal dual fan set-up earlier in this thread you'll see that the middle area where the pulley would be is where there is the most room for clearance as the motors are located on the sides. As long as your radiator is wide enough to mount them, I'm pretty sure they'd fit. I had no clearance issues with those fans at all.

What kind of space do you guys have between the radiator surface and the nose of the water pump pulley? I have a custom brass/copper radiator and my mechanical fan is about 1/2" from the radiator surface. Also, great cars everyone, thanks.
