I drained the oil in my 12 bolt posi (68 Camaro) and would like to know which brand/type of oil to use. I was told this is quite critical.

View Full Version : posi rear end oil...WHICH ? Frank350 Jul 12th, 02, 09:42 AM I drained the oil in my 12 bolt posi (68 Camaro) and would like to know which brand/type of oil to use. I was told this is quite critical. RockyMtnRacer Jul 12th, 02, 11:00 AM As far as I know the only critical part is the posi additive. My rearend shop (and many others) have always advised using any name brand 90W gear oil plus the additive from the appropriate brand (Chevy, Ford, or whatever else you have). I've used most major brands of lube without any apparent differences and no problems at all. If you're just being extra careful, buy the lube from the dealer as well. I will say the posi additive for a Ford rear is the nastiest smelling stuff ever! I accidentally got a drop on my shoe and the stench followed me around for days. ------------------ Scott '69 400SB, Richmond 5-speed www.geocities.com/sdenning1 (http://www.geocities.com/sdenning1) click Jul 12th, 02, 01:11 PM Oops. Since you asked, here is my recommendation. Amsoil Series 2000 80w-90 Synthetic gear oil. It does not need the additive as it was designed to meet the posi specs right out of the can. Ive used the Amsoil products in everything for over 25 years with excellent results. It will run cooler than petroleum gear oils. You will be able to put your hand on the cover plate. Try that with a petro lube. If it runs cooler, that means less friction, which means longer life and better mileage. My new Eaton Posi is running like a clock with it in my 69 Camaro right now. I hope Big Gear Head drops a note in here as well. He sells tons of Eaton and other gear items in Kentucky and also recommends Amsoil. The Amsoil 75W90 Series 2000 is the best that I have used in a posi rear end. I put it in all of the rear ends that I build, unless the customer just refuses to use it.
