Hey guys,I've got a question that I hope you can help me with.A friend of mine gave me a set of 291 hump heads with 194 valves that apear to be in pretty good shape,but one of the heads has a hole drilled and tapped maybe 3/8''in the end about 1 inch under the valve cover rail towards the exaust side,I guess someone wanted an acc. hole.My question is can this hole be welded up and whats more are the heads worth fixing I'm putting them back on my 68 327.Any help would be appreciated Thanks,,,,Camaro BOB

heads can be difficult if not impossible to weld. can you just put a threaded plug in it? are you sure it's not for a sending unit of some kind?

i cant tell you if they're worth fixing, but a machine shop could.

I believe the old camel hump heads lacked the accessory bracket holes, so your assumption is probably correct bob. A plug would be by far the easiest and safest option. Cast iron can be welded, but you must know what you are doing. My boss welded a cast head after I broke a tap off in it one day, so it can be done. graemlins/clonk.gif

However, the nickel content of cast iron has changed over the years. So if someone tells you they know it can be done because they've welded cast before, keep in mind that the metal makeup may not be the same. If the welder isn't aware of this, he could seriously ugly-up your head.

Just put a hex plug, as already mentioned, in her and seal her up good with some JBWeld... pdq67

Sounds like a pair of 291 castings I used to have. I let a friend in the Ashland, Ky. area have them. The hole sounds the same anyway. Just put a plug in it and bolt them on the block so that the plug is towards the firewall.
