If any of you guys that are running a 406 have any input for me it would be greatly appreciated. I finished mine last summer, and went with the Dart Alum. heads and the Comp cams extreme energy 274 cam. Currently have the stock rearend with 2.73 gears and replaced the powerglide with Th 350. Am putting together a ford 9" that currently has 4.10 gearing in it. I use the car mainly to cruise town and go on the interstate very little. I have run the motor up to 6000 rpm...I've had some tell me that's tops for this combo. Will these gears be a gas or a bummer?? Can't wait to melt two tires instead of one...

on my 406, 68 camaro, th350, 27" tire, i run 3:73 gears and i think they are just about perfect, (i drive around town, occasionally hit the freeway, and drag race mine). i actually put a lot of thought into gear selection, and went with 3:73 because of the torque a 406 makes, it pulls like a banshee from stopped till i shift, and with my combo i shift at around 6800. but, with that said, if you have 4:10's then i would just leave them in. it may be a little much on the freeway, but it will be a blast around town, your biggest problem will be tires, (and gas), that thing will be a serious tire fryer! one thing you might consider is getting a 28" tire, that will offset the gears a bit. you also better get a spare set of tires http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

I had 3.08 pegleg and went to a 2.73 posi<thought its was a 8.5/3.08posi> http://www.camaros.net/forum/rolleyes.gif , but have been impressed with the performance even with the 2.73's... still looking for a 8.5, but might settle with a new posi and gears in the 3.08 rear. I'm also looking at 3.73 - 4.10's. its all time and money, never have both.

I run a 3.42 posi in my '79 TA (406sbc, XE274 cam) and wouldn't go any higher (numerically). My car is a weekend street cruiser (limited highway use) and the gear feels perfect. I agree with 68rs406, the 406 makes so much torque that alot of gear isn't needed. Also, with less gear, you can play around more from a roll whereas, with 4.10's you can't. BTW, I think even a 3.23 gear would be excellent with a 406.

my 9.5 to 1 CR. 406 with a 280/230 cam, M-20, 3.31's and about 26.5" tall tires was still on the cam cruising around town...

Ya, she'd get ta bucking every so often AND really **** the wife off!!!

I figure a CC 268HE woulda been perfect!!!pdq67
