View Full Version : spade fittings? where to find?
click Mar 26th, 03, 08:24 AM While fixing some fried wires I needed to pull some spades from the plug that plugs into the headlight switch and also the counsel plug.
Is there a place that sells the brass spades somewhere? Local parts stores carry some but none of them match. Has anyone replaced them and know of a web site or ideas?
Thanks

Spames Mar 26th, 03, 08:40 AM Have you tried Radio Shack?
click Mar 26th, 03, 10:33 AM Radio shack was first place I went, they also have standard spades but nothing that pushes into a connector like on our cars.
Other ideas?
Spames Mar 26th, 03, 10:50 AM Which connectors are you working on? I have a complete wiring harness I just pulled out of my car. If you start getting desperate, E-mail me I'd be happy to send you anything you might need.
click Mar 26th, 03, 11:08 AM The wires melted from the plastic plug up about 4" along the white wires of my headlight switch. I had to pull the double white wire and its spade from the plug so I can replace the wires. The spade is what I actually want to get. I have not yet tried to remove the wire from the old spade and save it, they look pretty tight and I might break it, so I was looking for the spades (new) to replace the old one. Same with counsel plug, a fried wire there also made me pull the mini spade from that plug too.
ORENCH Mar 26th, 03, 01:31 PM I have been able to open the connection from the used spades, and re-use them, by using a small wire/diagonal cutter, a small knive & long nose pliers. Just be carefull with the knive, they like the flavor of finger tips skin. smile.gif Haven't seen a place which sells the original type female spade connectors, they have a little metal clip that grabs inside the plastic plug which is specific for them, so Spames offering looks good to me.
MRCOOL_RSSS350 Mar 26th, 03, 04:46 PM Hi Click! How many do you need? I have 4 or 5. E-mail me with your address and i will get them out to you.Mr  Nick graemlins/beers.gif
click Mar 26th, 03, 05:14 PM Well Im not 100% sure but I slowly worked the outside folding tabs off the wire insulation, then I had to saw the wire off ahead of the inner tabs that fold over the bare wire. Those were buggers. I ended up drilling with a 1/18 bit thru one side of those tabs then I could get a knife edge up under the other side to fold it up and release the bare wire. phew.
Now I need to get some heat shrink and put it back together. I appreciate the offers guys and if my re-assembly ends up breaking the locking burrs or some other issue I may have to take you up on the offers. MrCool, you dont have an email address in your profile. In case I need to drop a note later.??
Thanks again. graemlins/beers.gif graemlins/beers.gif

You may want to re-consider trying to replace the contacts. It's far easier just to get a connector off another vehicle with about 6 inches of wire and solder/heat sleeve the wires. Any GM vehicle with a pull on type switch will work. Some vehicles use a couple of different colors wires but just match the positions.
click Mar 27th, 03, 04:18 PM John, no kidding? And here I thought those RS switches were probably different. I never thought to check styles of plugs on headlight switches. My salvage yard only has some early 70's pickup trucks for GM parts. I will snap a pic and take it with me to check their plugs. wooohooo that would be a break if I can find one of them.
The counsel plug is another story so I will just patch that together and check contacts when done.
Thanks for the tip John.
p.s. fuel guage still isnt responding right with the resistor installed. It might be the guage afterall. But more testing to do when the tank is back in the car.
;)

The switches may be different and you may have an extra ground tang for the console lights but the connector should fit. If you do have an extra spot for the console light grounds, all the white ground wires can be tied together.
Can't find something, let me know. Still have some 70s stuff out here.
Did you screw the nuts down on the resistor before you did the tests? The resistor needs a good connection.
click Mar 28th, 03, 07:18 AM John, I used 0000 steel wool to clean up the brass on the resistor and think I got the nuts pretty tight too. When I get the tank installed I will re-do it again. Priority now is get my car to the paint prison so I can get it back.
Question tho?? Do I need the neutral safety switch installed in the floor shifter (th350) to run the car to the paint store? Im hoping I can leave the dash off and just install one seat and shifter to drive it a short distance and back.

MRCOOL_RSSS350 Mar 28th, 03, 07:22 AM Jim make sure you don't have a short on the dimmer switch. Some times thats what causes the wires to burn at the headlight switch. One more thing If you have more then 60watt headlights that kicks the $hit on the headlight switch wires also!!By the way you have mail ;) Nick

Dunka graemlins/beers.gif Under the dash, top of the column, there's a connector with 2 purple wires in it. If the NSS isn't hooked up, you need to jumper the 2 purples. Try flattening out a piece of solid wire with a hammer and sticking it in the contacts for a jumper. Put some tape over the jumper. Remember the car will now start in any gear.
Trick1 Mar 28th, 03, 11:33 AM Wow what timing,
I just got back from NAPA with a handful of these suckers....
Bring one down and they will hook you up.
I needed the female side they are .250 or 1/4 in. .31 cents a piece.
I am redoing my engine compartment harness.

18436572 Apr 1st, 03, 02:43 PM Here's a page from a link that John Muha had posted not too long ago, they are the correct oem "packard 56" replacement terminals for anybody thats interested. (gotta scroll down on the page)
http://www.madelectrical.com/catalog/flat-blade.shtml
click Apr 14th, 03, 05:41 AM Update on spades... the Camaro consel wiring harness uses a unique connector and terminals not found on any other vehicle I guess, made by Packard back then. American Wire still makes them but with a machine and cannot just grab a handfull of those terminals to send out. They can rebuild a connector or sell you a new one. The Tech guy was helpful and recommended I just jumper the one bad wire I have over the connector with simple male and female insulated spades and be done with it. Since its under the consel its out of site anyway.
I got a catalog from another company, Kent Automotive. www.lawsonproducts.com (http://www.lawsonproducts.com) They sent me their catalog which has most everything you find in ACE or napa stores. Most items are bulk in boxes but at least its a good reference book for part numbers. It has Body hardware and Elec. parts.
Thanks for the help again folks

sudo1a67ss350 Apr 14th, 03, 03:06 PM One other place you might look is your local Fleet Farm or hardware store. They had all kinds of different electrical connectors in the little parts drawers. Just a thought
