i have a standard 68 camaro....i have replaced the dimmer switch and the light switch.....i get regular headlights and when i hit the dimmer switch the headlights cut out

Just a stab in the dark. :rolleyes: could the lamps themselves be the wrong type (single element as opposed to double). Hope that sheads some light on the problem... :rolleyes:

Or maybe a bad dimmer switch out of the box? Either that or as DjD says, single bulbs?
Make sure the dimmer switch is well grounded too and the wire clip that goes into it has good shiney brass, clean them up with fingernail file or folded up sandpaper and wd40 for good contacts. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

they are the same lamps that my bro had on the car and he had high beams working....around the same time they stopped working the dash lights quit working

If you are not running super-megawatt bulbs up there:
Sounds like the high beam line is being shorted to ground. When you hit the highs on, it's tripping the circuit breaker inside the headlight switch and shutting everything off.
Could be as simple as a shorted lamp. I'd first start by unplugging the lamps, one at a time and see if the other side stays on.
