i just got the rear tail light harness and i plugged it in and i got no rear brake lights when i turn the head lights on.

i noticed a wire coming out of the steering column that was plugged into the previous wiring harness, i matched the colors and now the brake lights turn on when i step on them... but they dont light up when the head lights are turned on, only when you step on the brake pedal.

Any ideas?

sorry been getting alot of post that i spend time researching and find out its not the same year etc,
check connections on the horn relay.
or ground on the lighting circuit

Sounds like a grounding problem. Check the harness ground in the trunk. Usually when wierd things happen with lights or electrical, it is a bad ground.

or ground on the lighting circuit I dont use the horn relay, its disconnected and i use a 1 wire alternator.

well thats where your problem lies.
if you dont have a horn relay then I suspect a smoked wire.
horn relay also controls lighting
Im hoping you have a headlight relay at least?
also your main Dc bus goes to the horn relay?
frankly if your wiring is that modded I dont think no one can help ya unless im there to trace all the wires.
Im running a 1 wire alt. as well and I still have my horn relay hooked up.
I think you might be chasing wiring problems for awhile.

I think you might be chasing wiring problems for awhile. Wires are fine, i just bought a new wiring harness and installed it, all the lights work just perfect except the rear red running lights... and no dome light.

I also noticed that when the lights are in the off position the blinkers blink normally, but when you turn the lights on, the blink very slowly.

Could this be part of it?
