View Full Version : Alternator swap....

Read the archives.... eyes starting to blur!

Am I correct in assuming that if an alternator has the plastic enclosed fan on the front, and has the two-wire plug as well as the battery wire going to it, that it's an old 3-wire 10 or 12SI alternator? Or is it still considered a '1-wire'?
Will a CS still have the 2-wire connection along with the battery connection?

I know what the wires do and how to modify them on a First Gen harness to convert to a 1-wire alternator setup. I'm just confused as to what the term "1-wire" truelly means.
I'm trying to figure out what alternator is on this engine I have. What markings or charactoristics do I look for? From what I can gather, it looks like a 10 or 12SI version.

A 10SI & 12SI have the two-wire plug, 1/4 inch wide quick disconnects, aligned straight across "- -".

A CS alternator has a four-pin (round pin) connector.

I have an OEM CS130 alt on my dually and it has two wires from it, #8 AWG for BAT, and #16 AWG for the excitation.

Alright.... I was right then.
I remember seeing a picture showing the different pin-outs but didn't run across it, or missed it.

I know what to ask for at the auto parts joint to replace this one. Fortunately I have the complete harness for this engine as well as a new harness for the Camaro so I have the correct wiring to swap without hacking anything up too much.

Did CS130 alternators originate in the 90's? Or are they a little older than that?
