I just switched out my 69 camaro's transmission to a 350 turbo auto and now have no power to the starter. I shorted a screwdriver across the solenoid and the engine turned over but the wires to the starter started smoking. Also, the jumper cables we had hook up went in to a meltdown. Where do I start to look for the problem? (Before I made the trans switch, and I would crank the engine, the starter would sometimes stay engaged)

If the wires smoke you have a poor ground.
