Served 6 yrs (82-88) all in Germany (except for boot camp and AIT of course. Those "wonderful" moments were all at Fort Jackson South Carolina). We were the very last of the "old army" guys to be issued O.D. Green Field Jackets, Steel pot w/ liners, and C-Rations. tongue.gif

First off, TOMSTV, How in the hell did you go in in 70 and NOT end up in Vietnam? It had to be something special or a miracle. I am from the early 70's era. My school deferrment and lucky draft numbers left me to guard the Canadian borders. If I had been military, I would have ended up in Vietnam. I didn't care for that war and felt we should not have been there. BUT, before anyone jumps to high, let me say this. I buried two of my freinds who were in Vietnam. Then as well as now, I have great respect for the men and women that were military then and now. I stood and defended them in those years and I stand and salute them now. I thank god for our military and ask him to look over them each day. As a side note, we are spending our vacation in DC this year. Above and before anything else, I demand we visit Arlington (1), the WALL (2), and the Law Enforcement Memorial (3). I hope to instill in my son and daughter just what these men and women have done for this country and us as individuals. I will have them locate my friends on the wall and we will lay flowers at the LE Memorial as I have lost four dear friends and they are there. To each and every one of you who have served and are currently serving, I thank you. I Thank you very much.

As a matter of fact,I did get an Overseas Alert Statement, on May 19 1971,saying that I as going in August,of that year, from Fort Sill.
However, the orders were cancelled,as they were starting to withdraw troops at the time, and I got lucky for once.It seems that I get lucky when I really need it,that was one of those times for me. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

See if national guard status allows retirement credits to be transferable. NG would roll your active and reserve into one then the whole amount might be transferable. Some of the state employees in the NG like the added points of NG.

so state employees can get military retiremetn points transfered over? i guess it just depends on the organization. i know that s.f. does not as of yet.

Angelglo, in Ohio (the true birthplace of aviation) one can "purchase" their military time in their retirement system. It isn't cheap, but it can get you out earlier. Whether it is PERS or PFDPF, either one will work it out for you and all you have to do is deduct more each paycheck. If your agency will "purchase" it for you, GOD BLESS them. I would see what can be done and consider it. I've been at it for 26 years, 4 to go. If you are just starting out (1 to 6 years), thinking about retirement now is the right move. After 15 to 20, you may wish you had done it sooner. Lets see, 4 years=48 months=208 weeks at 40 hours a week=8,320 hours, not including vacation time, sick time, and "stress" days. Looking better. graemlins/beers.gif graemlins/beers.gif graemlins/beers.gif

National Guard honors active duty points big time. State employement is also what National guard is concidered since you are attached to the state. NG lumps fed and NG together. States should honor NG retirement points since NG is pretty much working for the governor/state. Since I think you are state, county, or municipal there is a chance state points are able to be roll over into your system. Just a thought.

I was in the Air Force active duty for 4 years and have been in the AF Reserves for 1.5 years. I am a 2w1 or a 462 for you old guys. And for the rest that means I load bombs and missiles on Jets. I have seen my fair share of desert time and been places most of you will never see... some good and some bad. Saudi is the arm pit of the world! I have worked on the F-15c/d and A-10. Currently living next Eglin AFB Fl (panhandle)

3 years active duty in US Army from 75 to 78 as an artillery surveyor. Basic at Fort Dix, AIT at Fort Sill, and the rest of my time at Fort Hunter Liggett and Fort Ord in California. Lots of good memories.

They say that in the Army,
The coffee is mighty fine,
It looks like muddy water,
And tastes like turpentine,

Oh Lord, I wanna go,
But they won't let me go,
Oh Lord, I wanna go home,

They say that in the Army,
The biscuits are mighty fine,
One rolled off the table,
And killed a friend of mine,

Oh Lord, I wanna go,
But they won't let me go,
Oh Lord, I wanna go home

(one of the few I remember that I can post here!)
