: fuel gauge wacked

ive got a new auto meter fuel gauge and the hookup says one to ground, one to ignition switch 12v, and one to terminal post on sender.
Do i really have to drop the tank and hook up a wire to the sender? or does it come all the way to the dash. i tried hooking up the wire that went to my stock gauge and the fuel gauge pegs past full. I think its a brown wire. Is that the right one? whats the right one? thanks

You may need a fuel sender that is compatable with your gauge

the fuel gauge that i got is supposed to compatable with most GM after 65'. its part #ATM-4314. Its made for sender resistances that have 90ohms when full and 0 when empty. is this what first gens read? My old gauge worked so i know that the senders cool. But i think its the right one. Anybody know? thanks http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

You don't need to run a new lead. Measure the brown (tan) wire to ground. You don't need the key on. You are right. It should measure between 0 to 90 ohms. Check the ground lead going to the meter. Problems with these two leads can send the meter to full.

I went with the same fuel gauge. I spliced in to the tan wire (behind the original gauge assembly). The ground wire (on gauge) needs to go to the same ground wire as sender. This ground is located just forward and right of the tank on the frame. I just ran a wire through the interior under door sills, through the trunk and through the same hole that the original sender goes through , across the top of the tank and crimped a connector that mounts on the same ground. The last wire is for an keyed igntion wire. I hope this helps you. I can send you some pictures if needed.

Why run that ground wire all the way back? It doesn't make sense. There is only one ground in an automobile, and that is the battery. All other grounds connect to this single ground via the various ground straps between the chassis, body and engine.

After thinking about my previous post, now I'm not so sure. Someone please enlighten me.

The reason I'm not so sure about what I said previously is because of a possible difference in resistance by connecting to just any ground versus directly to the sending unit's existing ground.

So which is it? http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Ground IS Ground...as long as the connections are clean, You do not need an "extra" ground....that particular circut doesn't pull enough current for "voltage drop" to be a concern....Billy

If I remember correctly...when I replaced my bad sender it went beyond full (the old sender). So, until the new sender came in I had to ground the sender to keep it at empty. I think you are not getting a good ground. Try adding a wire and connect to battery ground or a good frame ground. I think a clean secure grounding will suffice. When I grounded the sender I grounded it to the inside of my trunk floor near my trunk latch. Hope this helps.

Camaro6666, did you get it working? I just ordered the same gauge for my 69 and am curious if I'll have the same issues.

Thanks

I have the Autometer fuel gauge and it works fine. Originally, I had the old sending unit and the gauge wasn't accurate (the old gauge wasn't either). Once I replaced the sending unit, everything was fine.
