Can someone explain to me how to use RG-58 wire to plug into a BNC plug? Specifically, what portion, if any, do I need to strip off the wire, and if any tools are recommended/ needed.

Thanks a lot!

You need a BNC compression connection. It has a gland that slips under the shield. Then you need the proper sized bushing to thread in to pinch the gland and wire in place. The center conductor is soldered through a small hole in the tip. Oh and put the bushing on before the rest of the connector.

You might check some of the wire manufacturers web sites such as Beldon. Do you have a Fry's Electronics in Sacramento? I'd check them out. Ham Radio stores are another good resource. I've got an ARRL Amateur Radio Handbook here that has some excellent cross-section pictures and step by step instructions. Perhaps you can find an ARRL handbook at your local library.

You don't need any special tools other than a soldering iron, couple of wrenches, knife and pair of diagonal cutters. There are some pretty fancy strippers out there, but not worth the expense for a one time job.
