: Horn Relay / Voltage Regulator

Well... this is confusing http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif I'm tracking down the fact that my horn doesn't work and I also noticed that my GEN light will come on until I rev up the engine, then it goes off. I'm sure I have everything hooked up correct and there are no shorts. I cleaned all the terminals. At this point I think I have a faulty horn relay or voltage regulator (maybe both)?

How can I eleminate them from the equation? If I ground the lever on the steering column and press it in at the same time should I get a connect between the black wire (on the horn relay) and ground? What about the voltage output on the voltage regulator... what should each terminal be?

I have the assembly manual and eletrical diagram... neither really help much.

Any help would be great!

P.S. This is on my 68.

I swear these external regulators only last for two or three years before they start messing up. I just replaced mine because it was making a noise that almost sounded like a bad alternator bearing at low rpm. Darn regulator was pulsing intensly internally.

As for the horn problem. Start at the horn itself and work backwards. Logically the horn itself is subjected to the most extreme weather and road abuse. Take a hot wire directly to the horn and move the horn bracket to see if the ground gets better. Then look at the horn relay. Then look at the spring button in the steering column that makes contact with the horn button.

More info...

I still don't know if it's only the horn relay or both but I know now that if I remove the pink with a black stripe wire off the horn relay, then the GEN light goes out. Otherwise it stays on even if the car is not turned on. I know if I make a connection between ground and the pin lever in the steering column that it makes a connection to ground on the black wire on the horn relay. Which is in turn supposed to kick out positive voltage on the green wire I believe, right? If so, I'm NOT getting voltage on the green wire but I am getting voltage on the solid red and the solid black wires going to the relay. Any ideas on ruling possiblities out would be great. I just hate to order something for no reason. Especailly since the correct orginal voltage regulator is about $49. The horn relay is about $15 which isn't bad at all, but I hate to order it and fry it http://www.camaros.net/forum/frown.gif

And even some more info http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Well for $30 I went ahead and bought the voltage regulator and horn relay at Kragen's. It "looks" like the orginal so I'm happy (It's a lot cheaper than the $80 for the originals).

Anyhow I still have a small problem. On the relay I have the thick red and black wires hooked up and I have the green (from horn) and the small black (from steering wheel) hooked up. The horn works and the gen light is off. But if I hook up the pink (maybe faded red) with a black stripe through it to the horn relay then my GEN light stays on and the horn relay buzzes. I pull it off and everything is fine again. Does this wire go there? It has a clipped connector to allow it to fit. None of the other wires will fit there. There is also a connector on the voltage regulator that is missing a wire. But I don't think the pink with a black stripe wire goes there.

Any clues as to what the pink with a black striped wire goes to??

Thanks!
