Hey guys,
I started my car tonight and as I pulled out of my driveway the car shut off (lights, engine)....It was like I pulled the battery out no juice at all.
About 20 seconds later I had full power. Car started right up. I took off down the street and died again ( no juice).
I checked the charging system and it showed 11.9 while the car was running. Car was turned off and the needle barley moved.
I'm 99% shure the Alternator is bad...what do you think...I will know more Friday as I take the Alternator to get it checked....thanks

Sounds like a short in the chg system. The running volts should be around 13-14.7 V.

Well Milan I took the Alternator to an auto parts store and they tested it three times.....Alternator is good????????
Could it be a voltage regulator?
I'm thrown for a loop now.
Any suggestion out there?
THANKS

check for a loose or damaged connection at the negative batt connection (wire to fender) or positive batt connection (wire to junction box behind battery) as the car flexes, you can effect the current flow if the wire is broke internally or is hanging on by a thread.

I did find a broken ground cable,
The wire goes from the firewall to the frame....I need to pick one up on Saturday, could this be the problem?

I had a similar problem on my Z recently. Kept draining the battery but the alternator was good. Found a broken wire at the connector to the regulator. I removed the metal connector from the plastic connector at the regulator. Then I soldered the wire back to the metal connector and reinstalled. Problem solved.

I bought one of those Alternator with a built in regulator, I hooked it up and ran the car for about an hour...So far so good......Hope this fixes the problem.

Sounds like you did the right thing. An internally regulated alternator is the only way to go if you ask me. Just food for thought, the alternator from an 85 iroc with a 305, engine code G, I believe is a high output alt. that is the same wiring as the others. This allows you to have a 100+ amp alternator, but still be able to get a replacement at almost any parts store.

Been driving the car for a few days and so far so good...I had the old regulator checked and it showed good ?...It had to be the wiring in between them both....It only cost me 50 bucks for a reman. Alternator but every one thinks they are well worth it.
Thanks guys
